Gmail/No Connection

Thanks rlb!! I was looking all through the Google help but didn't find that troubleshooting suggestion. (I was searching for gmail and "No connection", the message I got on my Droid's gmail update.) Also nice you mentioned the additional 'Filter All" step for the Driod.

Anyway, doing a "Clear Data" on the gmail apps worked instantly! Nothing else had worked for me previously (battery pull, add new account of same name, change password, turn "Sync" on and off in the menus, etc.. ).

I didn't need to restart my phone. The gmail instantly started working and quickly sync'd my emails as soon as I hit the home button after clearing the data.

Gmail App FIX for syncing with Gmail

My Gmail App stopped syncing with Gmail on my Moto Droid. This resolved the problem follow steps below.

I have my phone linked to 3 separate gmail accounts. I started getting the "No Connecttion" error on the primary gmail account last night (this is the gmail account I logged into @ the Verizon store when I first received my droid). I tried to delete the account, but the phone wont let you delete the primary gmail account.

Note: Before you try the solution below, I would back up your contacts just to be safe. I didn't lose any of mine, but this never hurts. (Contacts > Press Menu button > Choose Import/Export).

I searched a bit and came across this:

App: Troubleshooting sync

On Android devices, the Gmail application is automatically synced with the Gmail server, and vice versa. If you experience problems with syncing, try clearing your device's Gmail application data and doing a fresh sync with the server.

THERE IS NO NEED TO FACTORY RESET YOUR PHONE! As stated in some other posts.

Just follow these steps:

1. Press your device's < Home > button, then press < Menu >.
2. Select Settings and then Applications.
3. Select Manage applications.
3a. (On the Driod, you then have to press Menu (dashed lines)
again, press Filter, and choose the Show All Applications option) - If you don't do this the Gmail App will not show, as it is only showing you all the apps you downloaded only.
4. Select Gmail Storage and then select Clear data. (I ALSO DID CLEAR CACHE) Answer OK when prompted.
5. Return to the list of applications by pressing the < Back > key.
6. Select Gmail and then select Clear data. Answer OK when prompted.
7. Restart your device (Press and hold the < End call > button, then select Power off. Press < End call > to power on).

Your device will re-sync with the server after restarting (this may take several minutes)

A RIB report

To, Rib,

Thanks for the solution suggestion, it worked and no other techie at either VZW or Motorola could figure it out without believing a hard reset would have to be performed.
You should consider having them hire you as a consultant.

Anyway, thanks again,

I had the same problem this afternoon. Luckily the GMail account that was used originally to set up the phone is not in use. I added another GMail account and use that. I got the same message (I just bought this phone a couple of days ago) and scoutred the web for answers. I heard the same things: reset, delete the account, click off the sync button and retry it. What worked for me is to delete the gmail account and readd it. I agree this is not good.

Now after looking a bit closer at this thread I see that Rib has a real solution to the problem. Thanks so much for posting it and I will bookmark it if I need to use it again!!

Follow the solution posted earlier about deleting the gmail app cache/data from the manage applications screen. This doesn't require deleting your account or resetting the phone. Takes like a minute or two and doesn't do anything except clear the gmail app so it can reload all your mail again.

I agree its annoying, but clearing the data is easy and quick and until a real fix is out that is what we have to do. No need to delete your whole google/gmail account off the phone...

Thanks Sword :)

Yes after I posted I edited my post stating that next time I will use Rib's far more elegant solution. Honestly this tidbit is not widely available as a searchable solution so I am very glad this forum is here otherwise I might have returned my Droid. I hope to contribute back some useful tidbits as I come across them.

In case someone digs up this thread, here is how you fix this issue. I found this answer on a another site:

"1) Mine was directly related to the number of labels in my gmail account, how many of them I am syncing up, and how MUCH I am syncing for each label. I can reliably get this thing to fail into No Connection mode.
2) The fix is straight forward, a bit of a pain, but works every tome for me. Seems like a bug, which means I am hoping for a fix in a future update.

So, to get my "connection" back:

1) Go into the settings menu for the phone
2) Choose applications
3) Choose Manage Applications
4) Under Manage Applications set the Filter to ALL. Not sure why this isn't the default but c'est la vie.
5) Scroll down and choose GMail Storage
6) Tap the botton for Clear Data
7) Head on over into GMail and VOILA!"

No connection on Droid Gmail...

Here's how to fix the issue.

1. Go to Setting > Applications > Manage applications
2. From the menu button select filter all
3. Scroll to Gmail Storage > Clear data, then select OK

This will "reboot" your gmail accounts. Go back to your gmail icon and within a minute or two all your emails will be back on your device.

Works like a charm.

Thanks gadgetguy,
This worked right away!
Mine stopped connecting tonight and this was the fix.

Mine stopped working tonight also. I tried this and got nothing, I think the phone is shot to hell, the date says december 31 1969 and the clock is 3 hours behind also lol.

I called vzw tech support but its too late, I guess i'll deal with them tomorrow.

Thanks for posting this though.
