gmail notifier WITHOUT new emails

My gmail notifier has gone crazy the last couple of weeks. I will check it on my phone. set it down, then sometimes almost immediately, it will ding at me and there will be a little icon at the top saying new mail. There is NO NEW MAIL! Arrrrr! It does beep at me when I do have mail, but why is it doing it when there isn't?

I think with this problem you would only received email from important people only. On the upper right side will be your gmail account and you can click the upper left side, it will probably show you the emails that you can't read before. What I would suggest is go to gmail > menu > more > settings > press the gmail account on account settings > ensure that priority inbox is not ticked. Then everytime your gmail chimes, you will see them in inbox.
