I hate to ask the obvious but have you made sure you have it checked to notify in the settings? Also make sure your gmail account is listed in your settings.

You hav to make sure that it is polling u can set it from 30 minutes - manually... sounds like urs is set to manually ...the more often it poles the more battery life u will b using so unless u need it for buisness u can set it for every few hrs

Do you have the sync button checked on the power control widget? Do you have background updates turned on?
