Google Duo is live and I don't see how it......

Let's be honest, Hangouts sucks. And market penetration is still practically nil. Any non nerds that any of you know use it? Exclude anyone you told to use it. How many?
1 in my case. 1. Out of many.
Verizon is pushing Message+. And it's working.
We have nothing like FaceTime. Still.
This is Google's answer. And it is needed.

Good point. But will duo be able to do what hangouts couldn't?

Unless Google replaces the standard messaging app with duo and/or allo I'm thinking not. At the end of the day most people are going to use what come stock unless what come stock sucks.

But you are right in hangouts didn't cut it. Be interesting to see how they will be able to make duo/allo standout above the rest.

Another good thing about Duo is it's cross platform.
Well, at least iOS and Android.

No web, no Windows, no OSX and no ChromeOS though that might work with the Android support that is coming. So it is a very little cross-platform, but far from as available as Hangouts is.

I'm no big fan of Hangouts, but it does work on practically anything out there in one way or another. It isn't as polished as I would like, but it is very functional. And Hangouts being specifically NOT tied to a single phone number is a plus IMO.

But again, you are that "te chie" individual. This isn't aimed at you Lparsons.
This is aimed squarely at FaceTime. iOS and Android is all the cross function it needs.
My one friend that I convinced to use Hangouts is very anti iPhone. She's up for a new phone now. My HO using friend... Told me: "I just wish Android had something like FaceTime...."
And, yes it is also doomed as long as VZW pushes M+ and ATT pushes whatever. And Sammy has its own messaging app. And..and....
The beauty of FaceTime is it ...god I hate to say it...it just works. It's always there integrated straight into your contacts. Android is far too "different, not the same" to compete with it now. You will always have to tell your friends "well, if you use/download/setup or install xyz app, we can do it".

OK, I hadn't really thought about it as a somewhat cross platform way to get something similar to FaceTime. Hopefully it will be accepted that way.

I'm primarily an Apple ecosystem type of guy, as are most of my family and friends that would do video calls, so it seldom comes up as an issue as we all just use FaceTime. Hangouts is there for text/voice mostly since it doesn't matter what I've got in my hands, there's a Hangouts for it.

I wouldn't wish that sentence on my worst enemies, I sincerely hope the damage caused from the simple utterance of that phrase doesn't cause you too much mental anguish.

everyone I know who doesn't have an iToy uses hangouts. We used it before it was Hangouts. Google Chat. It allowed for us to not used our texting plans and have group messaging. Again, before texting allowed that.
