Google Glass Developer Hackathon Attendees Being Held to Strict NDA

While this comes as absolutely no surprise, it's still a bit disappointing. Attendees of the new Google Glass Foundry, (the developer conference/hackathon starting next week), will be held to a very strict NDA (non-disclosure agreement). The will not be able to talk to the media or post publicly about anything they do at the conference. In fact, they are all being issued specific developer Google+ accounts that can be revoked at any time, and are forbidden to post anything about their experience on their personal Google+ accounts.

Additionally, Google will retain ownership of any media (like pics and video) captured by attendees while using the device. Furthermore, attendees must agree to "waive any moral rights you have and agree not to exercise them."

While this does not bode well for being able to catch any hint of leaked info about the devices in the coming months, there is one glimmer of hope. Apparently, another part of the agreement says the following,

Google warns participants not to use Glass while driving, biking, using sharp objects, or playing sports, and to use caution while walking and crossing streets. If they have any concern about the safety of using Glass, Google asks participants to stop using them and return them immediately.

This implies developers might be able to take their devices home with them after the event, or at least use them outside of the event, during the event. This opens up the tiniest possibility of seeing it used "in the wild" as Google's Co-Founder, Sergei Brin, has been apt to do over the last few months.

What do you guys think of Google Goggles... huge hit, or a tremendous flop? Most of us at HQ are very excited by the possibilities they provide, especially what they might eventually evolve toward.

I have no interest in them. I wear glasses all day and they would no doubt interfere with that. Plus, well, they just look kind of stupid. I don't see the point of having a device giving you constant data. I don't see it as necessary and frankly, I find it somewhat useless. Perhaps other people will see it as cool or even have a small use for it, I don't see it myself.

If it makes my life easier, then maybe... otherwise it'd just be another shiny toy I'd want only because it's shiny and new...

Not sure if I'd enjoy it or not as no one's divulged any actual live applications of it. :|

All it's been is conceptual stuff and simulated sequences that has very little to do with what I use a data connection on my phone for every day. As soon as I can actually see what it can and does do, then I'll think about it.

I just want it to play Ingress. Would be sick just to walk around and find, hack and attack portals.

I see google glasses the same way I see their nexus phones and tablets in they are releasing it to inspire other manufacturers to jump on board. Google's version will be open for developers to play and try different ideas with. The idea is to get companies like Oakley to jump on board and i can see it happening. Imagine sunglasses that can pull music from the cloud for a jogger while allowing him to keep track of his route, read email and texts, and get weather information all while running and not having to reach for his phone or watch. Will it be a device for everyone, no but people there will be a market for it just like the market for the smart watch.

These have a lot of possibilities. Having my speed, time and heart rate as a HUD is pretty awesome for runnes/bikers. Having a simple arrow showing you turn by turn directions while driving would be cool.

Having a ton of info available concurrently in your eye really has limited uses. I think a less is more approach will prove to be more useful.

Of course maybe Google added laser or x-ray vision abilities. Yea, that's the reason for the nda's.
