Google Navigation - can I turn it on just to "follow me"?

I was wondering the same thing. I'm used to having a "follow me mode" where it will just follow your path without having to set a destination. So far I haven't been abel to find a way to do it. I'm also trying to figure out if maps will let me set detours along my path....

I use the google map short cut that came on the phone as long as the GPS is on it should work. I use it with the aerial satellite view.

Yeah, sometimes i'll just choose "view map" and it will show and follow for a short time, but in this mode, I notice that it doesn't keep the backlight on like it does when your are activly engaged in navigation mode. and while the overhead view is nice, i'd like the "follow me map" to allow you to see in the same view as when you are using the navigation mode with a destination. I just wanted to make sure i'm not missing an obvious setting to do this. I know the program is still in beta and it will get better. I love it right now, it just seems to be missing a couple things.

I would like to know this too.

I use the normal Map View with the aerial view, but it would be great to have a Follow Me setting that uses the 3D perspective view.

I would like to see a quick way of doing this but I think I have it doing what you are saying in my car. I have it docked and charging and just go into nav, hit the back button when it asks for destination, then turn on my location with the sat layer on and it stays on and shows where I am at all times.

Ya but this is still just the 2D map view showing your location. It isn't a true Follow Me view (3D perspective, information about what road your on, etc.)

Thinking about what you proposed while I was driving I do see that , as you put it, a "follow me" mode would be nice. The part about showing you what street you are on at the time would be much more like a built in nav.

As far as I know there is no way to get the 3D street view to follow you on the screen as you're traveling. If you've ever gone in to street view and tried to move your view down the street by clicking the arrow buttons... it takes a few seconds to load the next view. The problem is that there isn't anyway for Google maps to download/refresh quick enough to keep up as you're cruising along at 30-70mph.

So it is possible? How do you do it?

From what I've found, it is only possible to use the Map with My Location set and this will give you a 2D overhead map view of where you are and it will update as you are driving.

BTW - if you select MENU, MORE, LABS and and check the My Location Button it will place a blue button on your map screen. All you have to do is "press" the blue button above the zoom icon and the map will travel with you as you drive. Another setting in that menu is Compass Arrow and if you check that option then you will have a little arrow pointing in your direction of travel.
