That's just so damn unwieldy to have that thing sticking off the side or bottom of your phone...

I feel you but if I cared what people thought about my mobile device or it's accessories, I would have gotten an iPhone.

They make these USB keys the size of my thumbnail, plus it's the perfect size helping me to hold my device without the need to touch the screen.

My point to all this is if the Android mobile OEM's give you lemons...
