Google Voice...a question

Ok sorry for all the questions about GV I'm new to it. I was just trying to set it where my little voicemail icon next to the call button would call GV. When I went to Settings>Call Settings>Voicemail service>Google Voice it said "reading" for a long time so i pressed home, then it looked like it was good but, i tried to go back to "my carrier" and it dials *86 but it goes to my GV, is it supposed to do this? because i thought i had to dial the number GV gave me. Did GV totally hijack my other voice mail to where it cant be used anymore?

think there is a option on google voice website to change it back

IF you use the number they give you to program change your phone voicemail on your vzw number yes the other voice mail is gone if you change it back on the google voice website then it will be google voice mail if they call the google voice number and vzw voicemail if they call the vzw number if you want them to get google voice mail when they call your vzw numebr it is all or nothing on that you cannot have it record messages on both through the same number

I did not get a google # after originally signing up and decided to see if I could get one now. I can and they did not charge me anything.

TekHawk is right. To clarify a little more there are 2 different pieces to setting up Google Voicemail on your phone:

  1. program your VZW account to conditionally forward calls from your cell phone to your Google voicemail (that long #7.... number you had to punch in). If a call is missed, your phone will forward to Google's voicemail service instead of Verizon's.
  2. program your cell phone's voicemail dialer to call GV instead of Verizon's voicemail service. This is done through menu-->settings-->call settings-->voicemail service.

As TekHawk suggests, the easiest way to disable GV voicemail is to uncheck the option in the web interface (and follow the subsequent directions). Then switch the voicemail dialer button on your phone back to "Carrier".

Thanks for the update and sorry for the misinformation everyone. I guess they only charge to change numbers once you already have one?...
