I saw the google voice thread and replied to it, but was afraid my comment would get lost do to its length.
Google Voice is available to students, no invite is required.
Google Voice for Students - Submit email here for invite (i think you need a .edu email, i already have GV)

If you are wondering how long it will take to get your invite, it should arrive within 24 hours. Ive had many friends I go to school with all express interest when they noticed I had GV, ive forwarded about 6 people to that google page and they were all accepted the same day
On a side note, i also noticed people are interested in google wave.. its open to everyone now http://googlewave.blogspot.com/2010/05/google-wave-available-for-everyone.html
