Google Voice - got charged $60.??????

Contact Verizon and ask about it. If you had no texting plan on the phone at all and something wasn't set up correctly you weren't texting for free. Also, make absolutely sure you have your GV outgoing number in your F&F list, otherwise every call is eating minutes.
Oh really?? I wasn't texting for free?? Isn't that what I just said? I was being charged=wasn't texting for free. I dont use GV for calling, only for texting.
My question was how to set up gv so I don't get charged for texting. I already know I was charged.

it sounds like you might not have added it to your friends and family properly. You should also drop the attitude considering you're the one that screwed up and now you're asking people for help. You'll get more help if you're polite.

In GV settngs on your phone, under "Sync and notifications" if you have "Notifications via text message" checked then you are using Verizon for text messages, not GV. This setting must be UNCHECKED for you to use GV free text messaging.

Adding your GV number to Friends and Family does NOTHING. GV does not use your GV number for inbound or outbound calls. There's a third party app that you can use to force this feature, or you can use the GV callback feature, but other than that there's no way to make free GV calls without using plan minutes. F&F does nothing.

You need to sign up for a custom Google Voice number and use that for all your outbound and inbound text messages via the app on your phone. Its free because you are using an online service (Google) over your data plan and not regular text bundle.

If you are positive that you are using a Google Voice number for all inbound and outbound texts via the app on your phone and are still being charged, then you should contact verizon.
I already have a custom google voice number & thought I already use that for my outbound & inbound text messages. When I send a text to someone, they say my cell number is showing up as another number. Isn't that a sign that my custom # is working? I'm still being charged.
When I do get a reply text, I get 2 of the same msg's. One from the person texting & teh other from, like a google msg. but I tried sending from both sources & still get charged for both.

No, you don't need a special number for free texting. Texting by google voice is done by data, not regular texting.

Here's what I think is going on: Are you getting regular text replies saying you have a google voice text? That will cost you every time. Make sure you don't have any notification for email or text. Just get your notifications from GV. Go on line into your Google Voice page and go through your set up. Make sure your device isn't listed for either a text or an email. That should keep you from getting charged.

GV has Notifications via text msg unchecked. I still get charged, though.

I don't have a friends & family plan. It's only my wife & me.

When you text are you using the "Voice" application (Google Voice) or the stock text app, Handcent, or ChompSMS? If you're using Voice you will NOT be charged by Verizon. If you use anything other than Voice you will be charged.

Setting up gv correctly <> no more charge for text messaging!

If you want to use SMS free of charge, you must ask verizon to block your # from sending and receiving text message. Block is the word. Otherwise, you will be charged if people send to your vz number or you inadvertently sent it usng anything other than gv app.

After your number is blocked for text messaging, you won't be incurred any cost related to it.

Gunmetal_Orange;932477 Sounds like you need to go into the settings on your app and turn off text message notifications. Seems like when ever you get a message on GV app it sends you a text message to your regular number letting you know you got a text message. The option is on by default and I think was made more for voice mail notification said:
Good catch G_O. That's was absolutely a problem I had and didn't even know it!!!

Why don't you just get verizons unlimited plan? What plan do you have?
Sent from my DROIDX using DroidForums App
I have 750 shared minute plan w/ my wife, wife has 250 txt limit for $5 extra.
I really don't feel like paying over $100/mo for 2 phones if I can help it. The unlimited plan I thought was expensive, isnt' it?
W/out the texting going over, my bill's around $80/mo. for 2 phones (one Dx & one chocolate).

Here's an important consideration: if you don't MAKE SURE you give your friends your Google Voice number, they will in all likelihood text your normal cell phone number (20 cents right there). If you get their text, and without noticing the icon of the program you use to send your reply--Google Voice is a classical phone handset inside a circular "call-out", the default Android program is called "Messaging" and is a smiley face inside a rectangular "call-out" (THEY LOOK VERY SIMILAR)--your outbound reply will be another 20 cents. That handles threads that begin as an inbound text to your normal cell phone number.

What about if you send out a text from Google Voice? Two things can still go wrong. Either your text pal may send a response to your cell phone (which is pretty unlikely) or they will hit reply, which means it goes to to your Google Voice number. As several here have noted, it's probably the case that you have texts set up so you get a copy to your cell phone number (another 20 cents).

Turning off this copy is not so easy. The only way I've been able to do it is with the following:

(1) Log in to Google Voice on your computer.
(2) Go to "Settings" (upper right corner), select "Voice Settings"
(3) Under the "Phones" tab, find your cell phone
(4) Select the "Edit" button
(5) There is an option called "Text Settings"
(6) Is "Receive text messages on this phone (mobile phones only)" selected? If so, turn it off! That is probably the problem.

This should solve the problem for texts that are correctly routed to your GV number, BUT REMEMBER: you have to make sure everyone uses your GV number to send you texts (or have Verizon turn off texting to your cell phone number) or you'll probably continue to pay for texts when you shouldn't!

You can use GV to make free voice calls too if you add your GV number to Friends and Family and use a dialer like GVMyVoice. But you have to be careful and use a dialer or manually dial your own GV number.

friends and family doesnt mean having multiple phones, its a list that you put numbers onto that you can call for free. I have friends and family and its just me on the line.

Friends and Family has nothing to do with text messages anyway. Texts to F&F numbers still count against your Verizon plan.

If you use GV none of them count against you.
