Let's say my phone number is yyy-yyy-yyyy, and my google voice number is zzz-zzz-zzzz. If someone messages me on my phone number (the yyy) would the SMS be forwarded to my google number (the zzz). If so, would this cost any money?

SMS is not forwarded from your mobile to your GV number. There is the option to have forwarding the other way 'round (from your GV number to your mobile) and SMS forwarding in that case will cost you if you don't have an SMS package.
