I downloaded the GV app but it wont verify my phone number?

I thought this was because I had to have an invite to use GV, but from what I'm reading on here that doesn't seem to be the case. Any help?

GV removed the need for an invite about a month or so ago. It knows nothing about your number until you tell it something by creating an account.
