Google Wallet

So tonight I was bored and decided to set up Google Wallet. Apparently I already had an account but it had an old credit card that I had cancelled. I re-set it up again with my current cards. I liked the feature of it scanning my cards and all I had to do was enter my 3 digit code and name and address information from the card.I attempted to link my bank info but it wouldn't sign in even with my credentials correct, so I just opted for the 3 day verification. With the cards, it shows a picture of my credit card so I know by visually looking at the icon which card I'm selecting. I was surprised it accepted my Discover card too.

I'm really not sure who will accept Google Wallet at this point, I'm sure some grocery stores and convenience stores will have the pad. I guess I was under the impression you could somehow scan the NFC even in a card swipe situation. How useful will this be for me? Well, when I'm pumping gas or if I get lucky and find a NFC card reader, I probably won't be using this. I guess us Android users can actually thank Apple for getting this ball rolling for us. Apparently we've had this NFC technology for a couple of years ago but until Apple announces they're adding it, we took a back seat to this technology.

McDonald's has been an early adopter of it.. I took my son for chicken nuggets.. And our McDonald's all take tap pay, Google wallet, and apply pay..

Walgreen's has had it forever, too. Apple didn't get me to try it. My new phone did that finally supported it.

I wanted to try it, but I didn't know where to use it and I had that trouble verifying myself.

Since setting it up, I've used it at McDonald's and Walgreens a couple times. It's actually quite handy when you're waiting in line and already have your phone out to check emails/forums/etc. Just touch it to the pad.

I was in Staples earlier this week and they have a pad, but it said Apple Pay, so I didn't even try it. Didn't see the Google Wallet logo anywhere. Probably should've, just so I know, but I don't go there often at all.

I can't believe that Wal-Mart doesn't have a pad to accept one or the other at this point.

I doubt I'll ever see Wallet supported at any of our grocery stores or other stores. Despite the fact that we've lost several businesses, we've still got plenty of small chain type grocery stores that are "mom & pop" owned. We don't have Target, Kohl's, etc unless we drive an hour and a half at least.

I am curious, do I understand correctly that I can save my rewards cards like the grocery store and gas station reward card in my Google wallet? If so then it would only be able to be read if the store had the Reader capability?

Depends on the card. I have a Walgreens rewards card. When I get near Walgreens, I get a notification that I can use my rewards there and in that notification is a barcode that they can scan for my rewards card. Kinda handy/cool, except that I pass Walgreens every day going to and from work. It also seems to only register that I'm nearby when I'm on the street that Walgreens is listed as being on. IE, it's on a corner and I turn down the street that's effectively behind the store to get to and from work. If I stop there on my way from work and use that "back" street, it doesn't usually notify me. When I go to lunch and turn onto the main street (that Walgreens' address is listed on), I get the notification. Not perfect, but serves it's purpose and keeps one extra card out of my wallet.

The gas station across the street from my house has a loyalty card as well, but it's a keychain with some sort of NFC. It doesn't work with Wallet. I was kinda hoping I could tap it to the back of my phone and my phone would accept the code or whatever and mimic the card when I went to the gas station, but no dice.

So, long story short, if the card has a barcode, chances are you should be able to use it with no problem. If it gets swiped or scanned, results may vary.

Doesn't every store that has a Reward Card need a reader? That's cool that Wallet pops the card up when you are there, Johnny. I installed the Walgreens app, and it doesn't do that. Maybe I will try Wallet for that.

Johnny, that is cool. Let me ask just to clarify, let's say I had a Safeway rewards card and they don't use NFC, the reward card will have to be my plastic one right?

Walgreens doesn't use NFC. They have a handheld scanner and scan the card on your phone. That's more what I was talking about. MOST do NOT have NFC, they have scanners.

I would think so, unless they have a barcode, or unless Wallet creates a unique barcode that could tell their scanner that this was your rewards card.

So I just added my rewards cards this morning. A few years ago with I got the OG Droid there was a similar rewards program that you scan in the loyalty cards but never seemed to work. Maybe 6 years later things have advanced technologically.

I don't see too many opportunities to use Wallet either, but it would be fun to try. I am hoping that electronic payments via our phones will one day be as simple as using our Mastercard, Visa or Discover cards.

Where is accepted, Wallet is super easy to use. Unlock your phone, tap sensor, put in PIN when app opens, verify, done.

That's what I usually do too but just tapping the locked phone to the terminal will open the app for the PIN entry.
