handcent question - disabling stock sms?

is there a way to disable the stock sms? i want to use handcent only but the messages are staying unread in the regular messages area and my custom notification tone is not happening unless i sent the last message from handcent. what have i done wrong or how i fix it?

Open the stock app, tap menu, tap settings, and uncheck notifications
