HELP! Can't use my Droid til I resolve this!!!

Just got my new Droid and I am completely excited, but some things I've read concern me beyond belief.

I do not want all my gmail contacts on my Droid.....I only want the contacts that were in my phone.

My gmail contact list probably has several hundred people on it that I keep for referential purposes and because I tend to be the one people call to find someone.

The only people I want in the contacts on my Droid are the contacts from my LG (which are backed up with Backup Assistant). I could, if PUSHED go along with the 102 people in My Contacts...and I can manually add in the extras from my phone. But I do not (repeat NOT) want all 566 in my All Contacts

If your gamil contacts are ONLY email, you can go into your phone and have the phone display only contacts with phone numbers.

Contacts -> Settings -> Display Options -> Check Only contacts with phones.

I'm not sure if that will help in your case, but it might weed out quite a few contacts from Gmail that are email address only.

Mantis 5 - Yay! That will make it much easier. Although, honestly, I've never figured out how things are added into My Contacts as opposed to the general pool, but I've never had to worry about it before. I understand about importing the csv file of my backup, but will those go directly into My Contacts or is there an intermediate step?

nerdbox8 - That's really nice to know about, but I do have contacts even in my LG that are email only (twitpc, mobile facebook, although when I think about it those will probably become moot now that I have the droid and can use the apps directly..yay).

Thanx for your responses.

I haven't used MyBackup so someone else will need to answer that one, sorry!

Could you install MyBackup on the Droid and just import them directly?

When I got my Droid the Verizon store just copied all the contacts from the SIM card of my old phone, and then I synced to my Gmail account. I had to merge some contacts but it wasn't bad.

I put as little information in my Gmail account as possible and only use it as a backup email system, just because it seems a very intrusive program. I don't want my information to go anywhere or sync with anything period. If i want a contact on my phone i'll put it there, if i want to view my emails i merely log into my email(it only takes a second people).

This, I don't understand.

Why get a phone that is designed to work that way if you don't want the features?

It just confuses me a bit.

It is a minor part of the phone from my perspective. The droid does a multitude of other things. I just don't find it necissary to auto sync my emails and contacts.

Go into your sync settings on the Droid and don't sync your contacts from Gmail.

^+ right on the spot. Just turn off the sync and you should be good to go. But as a backup, as others have suggested, go online (via browser) and create folders and move your contacts out of the 'my contacts'. This will let you keep them organized anyway:icon_ banana:
