Help!!! Phone shuts its self off whenever....

Ok here I am again. This is starting to get frustrating because I went to the Droid 2 from a Blackberry Tour to get rid of the the problems of battery pulls and it having a mind of it's own. Now I have had this phone since October 3 and it it driving me crazy. Well to the problems......
Ever since last friday it will ding and in the notification bar it says preparing SD card. What the hell I haven't done anything with the damn thing to make it do that!!!! It has also started restarting its self just when ever. I was typing a text message last night and it just went black and shut off! The last problem I'm having is dropping the signal. Not just the 3G but the entire signal. I'm not using it anywhere different or anywhere I didn't use my BB. When I first got the phone I thought I should put the app killer and anti virus on there. Well the guy at Verizon informed me the anti virus was a virus so I immediatly deleted it. It has been ok up until this past week I'm about to through the damn thing across the room. It is my only phone I don't use a land line so when my signal is completely lost I have nothing. I expected more from this phone being Motorola and all.

Can any one help me here I hate going into the store because we only have one where I live and it is always at least an hour wait to be helped! Also I don't have my phone rooted. Its straight from the factory plus a few apps.

Thanks,
Amber

Bet you wish you had your BB back. Just kidding.
This is obviously not the experience you should be having, so we'll start from square one:
-Remove any apps you have installed. Give us a list of what you have first
-See if this changes anything
-If not, perform a factory reset. This is most likely what VZW would do anyways
-If it still shuts off on its own, go to VZ and exchange it

Here are factory reset instructions:
Menu/settings/privacy/factory data reset

good luck,
chris

Are you kidding me? I don't wanna loose everything I've put on it. That really sucks! Let me list them first and maybe you or someone will know it they are faulty.

All of the apps look pretty standard to me but I have a question. What was it you said about the verizon guy telling you the anti virus was a virus?

Backup your apps with titanium or mybackup.
Remove all apps or factory reset and see if it helps.
If not, go to VZW and let them jag with it for 3 hours.

Don't you have to be rooted for titanium BU? He's not rooted.

Lol After getting the phone I thought putting anti virus on it would be good seeing as you are open to the web and can do much more on the internet than any BB can. After I put it on there my phone started dropping the signal and restarting itself. So I mentioned I had installed the anti virus app and task killer and he said that the anit virus apps are viruses and that is why my phone was acting up. He aslo said I dont' need task killer because the apps will turn themselves off. So I immediately uninstalled them. Phone worked fine until about a week ago. Since it started acting up I hadn't done anything different that's what confuses me. I know and have been told even by users here that you dont' need the task killer but I'm telling you I have a **** ton of apps running all the time. I never have reinstalled the task killer and I read from google how it couter acts the way android works but there has got to be something. I will try moving the apps to the SD card and do that rebooting thing. But quick question will I loose my contacts and everything? If so I most likely will have Verizon do it or at the worst I get a new phone cause honestly this is ****y. If it wasn't for the speed I would switch back to my bb but now i'm spoiled with the speed.

Thanks wmnomore for the insight and help. I know if I have questions this is the place to come because with in minutes you guys answer them. I'm ok with using smartphones but understanding how the damn things work sometimes lol. The technical stuff is what blows my mind.

When you do a factory reset your contacts should be all backed up google. That's what I would suggest doing. And I don't know what the vzw guy was talking about anti viruses being viruses, unnecesarry maybe but not viruses.

Well I hope you guys are right. I just did the factory reset. I hope it works if I broke it I guess I will be making that little trip to verizon. ugh! Its reseting now. Hopefully it works and I just have to re do my apps this better not be a reaccuring problem becuase that would most def make it worse than BB lol.

Ok everyone who assisted me I did the Factory reset. It actually backedup my apps so everything is back to normal. Nothing seems to be missing. I just had to move things around and delete those stupid widgets. Thank you all for your help I hope that fixed the problem. While I have your attention I was wondering about a few things with facebook and the sd card. I never get notified if someone comments on my wall or other posts that I have posted to. It is driving me crazy because my BB tour notified me all the time. I went to the settings in facbook on the phone and made sure they are on and they are. Also as I was searching for stuff I discovered the apps from my BB were backedup on my sd card. There is a game on there that I would really like to have on my droid 2 but I can't seem to figure out how to move it or if it's possible. The game app itself is broken down into documents within the game file itself. Is this even possible or am I just hoping on somethig that ain't never gonna happen?

After I put it on there (the anti-virus) my phone started dropping the signal and restarting itself. So I mentioned I had installed the anti virus app and task killer and he said that the anti virus apps are viruses and that is why my phone was acting up.

Which anti-virus program, do you remember?
He lied, not "all" anti virus apps are viruses. A few of them actually do what they state. Look at the reviews.

He aslo said I dont' need task killer because the apps will turn themselves off. So I immediately uninstalled them.

Posh. The Android OS is famous for background processing, among other things. Yes, certain apps turn themselves off after you close them, but only the ones that are designed to. A majority of apps (Facebook, the Music app, Gmail, etc) stay open to keep the process in memory. That is comparable to putting a bookmark in a book to find your spot instead of finding it every time.

The *BEST* task killer I have is "System Panel Lite" off the Market. No ads, simple, easy, does the job.

But quick question will I loose my contacts and everything?

If your contacts are set to back-up to your Google account, no. It saves your contacts, and they will re-populate when you log back into your Gmail account after the factory reset.

Hope I helped a little bit.

That's what I thought about the apps because I noticed how the games and facebook were always running. I will try that out. So far my factory reboot has done well however some of my phone contact disappeared that ticked me off considering all my apps got restored and I didn't have to do a thing. Go figure. So do I need an anti virus or not? Thanks Amber
