I've had that problem with handcent except for me whenever I got a text there would be a second one showing in the status bar ( it was an old message that I even deleted) try going into menu settings applications manage applications and clear data in handcent. I think I had to do a factory reset to fix the handcent freaking out but that might work for you. The droid 2 is definitely an incredible phone and rooting is always awesome. Im rooted with the 928 droid theme. I definitely recommend it
