[How-To] DIY SoftKeys Mods

Yes, sir. So the keys are like stock, and still modifyable (is that a word?) But one can have brighter keys. Sticking a potentiometer in there might be kinda tricky, maybe. If it isn't tricky, it would be nice to adjust the brightness of the soft keys.

I don't know if that clarified anything or not. Lol.

Like how you adjust the screen brightness, I'm with you now. That would be something. I don't have any ideas on how to make them adjustable. It would be nice if you could make them independent of the screen brightness.

I found some transparency mods for AOSP and AOKP ROM's. But the ones I found at rootzwiki only had 20%. And having ran AOKP and the Milestone ROM's 20% wasn't enough. So I moved mine to around 80% - 90% and that was perfect for me if it helps narrow things down. Hell, if adjusting indipendantly is tricky, I think this will work.

I'll even buy the beer. :-D

Link me what you used to adjust them, or pm it to me. If there's some way to integrate it with a "slider-like" selector, it should be possible. It would be sweet if we could swipe across the soft keys to brighten & dim them. Having what you used should help narrow it down.

Here are a couple links for the AOKP ROM. With me not being a coder or even having any idea how things are written, I don't know how they incorperated it - framework, or SystemUI, etc. I do know, however that to find the mods for the nav buttons or soft keys, you go to settings/ROM Control/ Nav Button Mods or "Nav 'something.'" But hopefully having this link, you can narrow it down and hopefully it's easy detective work. And if it helps any, I mainly used the Milestone AOKP (seems to be more stable. And Milestone 3 is the latest that I know of. (Second link below.))

I really appreciate you looking into this, CJM!

is there a trick to doing the lights-out images? i swapped out the others just fine and made them blue, but when i opened up the lights-out images i can't see anything on the screen to change...i'm using gimp, if that matters. it's like the opacity is too low for me to see the image...doing a magic wand on the outside somewhere shows me the circle where the dot is, but i still can't see anything there even then...

I can't see them either. When I make them, I just put the new ones in the center

alright. one other question quick (i read over the thread and didn't see anything about it, my bad if i missed it)...i changed my keys to blue like i said, but in sunlight they're much tougher to see than the white ones were. is there a way to brighten them up a bit? i remember seeing a discussion about the white ones getting made brighter, but i didn't see anything that described how to do it...

The only way I try to overcome the brightness thing is duplicate the layer. Mostly for the White icons. That way the the image is bolder looking. The other way is a bit more involved & I'm not 100% on it myself.

So if I understand correctly while we are trying to research the adjustment bar, I can go in and add abother layer? I.E., I swapt the white softkeys in SystemUI.apk for ice blue. Reboot and then do it oger? This time adding the ice hlue on top of the ice blue?

(Scratches head)

Irony. It's what's for dinner.

wondering if anyone has been able to change the icons in the latest (builds 23 and 24) AOKP ROM's. i did it successfully using NinjaMorph in build 22, but as soon as build 23 was out, the images weren't sticking. tried metamorph and got the same thing. not really sure why, i have NEVER had an issue with ninjamorph, but for whatever reason, i cannot get the images to stick.

I havent tried aokp yet. The only thing I can think of is make sure you have the lastest version of busybox installed. Also, what metamorph are you using. I've seen the one from the market doesnt work well with the gnex. I use this one from droidpirate: http://droidpirate.com/android/MetaMorph.apk That should take you straight to the download. If it doesnt, the link is in the "How-To - Metamorphs" post here: Galaxy Nexus – droidpirate.com
