I don't know why everyone wants an invite. I just went to the market place and downloaded Google Voice, followed the onscreen instructions and when I logged into my Google account from my computer, I could magically use the Google Voice tab.:icon_ banana:

So all you need is to download the app...and it auto creates an account for you?:icon_eek:

If that's true, that's awesome!

Someone else go try because I already have google voice, lol

I don't have a google voice number (in my situation I don't need one) but there is a little tab I can click to set one up for myself should I choose too.

Nope. You need to have an invite so you can set everything up on the Google Voice web page. It will ask you for your login information and if you don't ave an invite it will simply say something like "account not found."

Go ahead and give it a try. www.google.com/voice. See if it allows you to sign in.

I just tried this with an alternate email and no, you don't get a phone number. It sets it up to work with your existing phone number.

Yeah, I signed in. Wouldn't it make sense for google to give you a free account? I mean you DID PAY for an android device after all?

But...there's a link that says "Get a Google Number"...

Also, when I actually click the link it tells me what a google number can do for me. if i click continue, it asks me for my zipcode and then a word or phrase to search for...I assume that is because i can get a number with a word or phrase!

Well, maybe you had an invite previously and you just don't remember seting it up? Or maybe you're absolutely right, but if you are you're the first one to discover that.

Somebody with a Droid who doesn't have a Google Voice needs to confirm this.

Perhaps it's changed. I know gmail used to be by invite only and now it isn't.

I guess either is possible...I know for a FACT that I NEVER asked for an invite...but idk...maybe someone sent me one anyway? I don't have any email record of such, and I check EVERY email I get. But I didn't even know what google voice was until I saw it in the Android Market place...

Could be. Yet they are still sending the invitations out.

My wife tried to log on to Google Voice the other day. She doesn't have a Droid but it told her she didn't have an account. So If it's open without a voice it may be for Droid people only.

The only way we will find out for sure is to have a non GV person give it a try and see what happens.

Well no, not really. You paid for an android device and got a pretty solid OS on your phone. Voice is still selective because Google doesn't want it flooded with people and crashing constantly.

Still, see if it will give you a phone number and whatnot, another user said it allowed you to sign in and set it up on an existing number.

I have a gmail addy that doesn't have GV on it. I will flash to factory and sign in with it to the droid and try this out.
