how to remove "icons" from screen

I just got a Droid X and im trying to learn how to use it....is there a way to remove some of the icons from the home screen, I tried touching them then "flicking" them off the screen......didnt work, any ideas?

Just hold down on the icon until it vibrates and then drag it to the trash can.

How do you remove icons from home page after they are uninstalled?

I may be doing something wrong, but that doesn't work, because there is no trash can on the new page that appears after holding down the icon. There is only a Remove area that removes the icon from that screen, but not the home page. I am a newbie to Droids, so forgive my ignorance of terminology, etc.
