How to STAY on 2.1 (rooted) & banish 2.2 Update message. Droid AND Good Custom Roms

Try CyanogenMod, but keep in mind any flash will cost you your installed apps unless you risk not wiping between installs. This is what Titanium Backup and Sync are for. If you don't like it, restore your nandroid and go back to where you were right before you flashed it in.

You could see about getting one of those HTC SenseUI ROMs kicking around. MotoBlur may also have been booted successfully on the Droid. I don't know, I don't like them so I haven't paid much attention. :)

"CyanogenMod" can you point me to a link for 2.1 that I can try now?

Also will Titanium Backup back up ALL APPS and APP SETTINGS?

Install it and find out. I don't use it because I'm fine with letting my stuff download again since I don't ROM jump. Sure. Just remember to install the correct app pack at the bottom of the page.

Is this 2.1? I need 2.1 for mow because of my WiFi issues with 2.2.

I downloaded "CyanogenMod 5.0.8-Droid" . I'm confused on the Google Apps. thing. Don't know what to do.

Long story if you want to read up on that. http://www.droidforums.net/forum/te...70898-wifi-issues-rooted-froyo-droid-1-a.html

BTW Thanks! I'll give it a try. I don't mind reinstalling my apps. Only a hand full use "custom" settings.

It should. In CM6 there isn't even the option to see if your phone is up to date in the settings. They want you to do it all through ROM Manager (no thank you), so... yeah.

How do I get CM 6? Also what is removed if anything? Do you know?

That's it. All that's removed from the ROM would be every single Google-licensed application -- like the Market. You can install that from the app pack down at the bottom. Just make sure you use the right one. It's a standard update.zip install.

Cool. Will give that a try. I've done the update.zip more times than I can count. Same for Nands. Do you think 6 is stable enough. Or is 5 just as good?

RC-3 is rock-solid in the stability department, as far as I've seen. Even running a game that tended to lock my phone solid hasn't made it hiccup so far. The 5 is 2.1 based, so it's missing out on all the fun things like the JIT compiler and the improved memory handling.

Oh, and it has ADW as the stock launcher, so, well, that's just awesome :)

I tried RC-3. Just didn't like it. Maybe a "themed" Rom of 2.1 would be better. I want a different feel without loosing and features. Since I'm beyond new to Roms (for the Droid) then any guidance is welcomed. :)

Plus I never could get the "Google Apps" to install via SPRecovery even after renaming it to update.zip.
The main RC-3 took though.

Weird that you couldn't get it to take. Well, there are nearly endless ROMs out there, and I don't have that much experience with them. Have you tried Sapphire? Lithium MOD? Though with lithium I have to wonder if your phone is bipolar.

Sapphire looks a bit well fruity. Don't know anything about Lithium
