That's how the price drops on almost all new phones I've seen over time.
Not iPhones though.

That price drop happens over a years time frame due to diminished interest in the phone.

DroidX fell from $200 to free in a little over 6 months. Got mine at around $100 from letstalk in August 2010.

Sometimes wirefly has a "buy 2 for free after rebates" deal.

I bought 2 Windows Mobile Smartphones for free AND got an additional $50 rebate (and some free accessories) in the past.
