[HUGE NEWS] VZ to allow unlimited Skype calling over 3g starting next month!!!1

Ok, just curious...

I am going to Germany in May for 5 weeks. If I took my Droid and turned everything off but WiFi and used Skype I could probably make free calls, no?

You can only make free calls to other Skype users. If you plan on calling regular numbers you would need Skype credit.

But I mean to call my wife from Germany, so long as she installed it on our computer?

Yes, if she installed Skype on her computer or even mobile device and you use your Droid to call her Skype account that would be free. That's a Skype to Skype call on VoIP.

I might have a reason to take my droid after all....

Just wait for the new Skype app that they're gonna have next month and install that as it should be better than the current Skype apps out for the Droid right now. Or if you want to test it now, check Nimbuzz in the market and create two Skype accounts, one for you and one for your wife. Let your wife login on Skype on the computer and login on your Skype account with your Droid.

Article says there will be a new app AND Skype Out will be supported too, so that means you can call regular phones with it if you have Skype credit. I have an unlimited Skype Out plan, they're cheap, so this is really something if it works well. I wonder if Skype IN will work too but I imagine that it will. I've tried Fring and could never get it to actually connect on a Skype Out call.

Even on wi-fi you couldn't make a Skype to Skype call?

I hadn't tried that, I was referring specifically to Skype Out. Skype to Phone, which Fring claims to offer but it just never would connect for me. It would just say "call failed" or whatever.

Did anyone here use a different Skype app besides the one on Nimbuzz that connected through 3G? I couldn't use 3G and had to use wi-fi.

I can't imagine why Verizon would announce that Skype over 3G will become possible next month if it were already available.

I use Fring, but I can't compare that to Nimbuzz since I've never tried it. Fring is pretty simple and I'm happy with it. I think I'll be using it a lot more after next month as I've got SkypeOut.

You can already make Voip calls on ATT. I know my husband has the Nimbuzz app for his iPhone(no jail break). I find the call quality to not be the best, and most of my friends don't have it, so I don't use it much at all.
