I don't like having to unlock the screen on the D2 every time I hit the power button on top of the phone. If I have to power it up, why do I have to unlock the damn thing every time?

It's more to lock the screen so you don't butt dial. If you always press the power button to turn the screen off immediately, then I suggest using an app to bypass that.
I used the pattern unlock for a while before taking it off. I now use the basic swipe unlock because the thing is never out of my sight anyway so no worries about theft. For $599 I make sure it is always within reach.
