Initial Reports about Motorla Xoom vs iPasd 2 Sales Not Great For Motorola

Almost anything compared to an iDevice isnt gonna look good in sales. Even with the Galaxy S 1 line that combined sold all those phones last year, if you break it down by individual phones and compare it to the iPhone 4 sales last year it wasnt all that great.

Doesnt make the Galaxy S phones any less of a phone. The Droid X had decent sales last year, the EVO too. Combined they still didnt sell more than the iPhone 4.

But it doesnt make them any less of a phone.

exactly. that's why i said this is not a surprise. no individual android device will ever outsell an ios device. and i think most people know that. and it's not just because it's a status symbol or only teenage girls use it like some people think, obviously that's dumb. apple makes good products, that people like. trying to downplay apple's success is kinda naive.

Well said, my sentiments exactly...except stating that no device will ever outsell iOS, that's a bit naive as well. What goes up must come down, that's the laws of physics via gravity, the description of history, and also the laws of business and success via consumer demand. It may not be Android that outperforms them, but eventually they will be irrelevant when the new fad kicks in for some other name brand everyone has to have.

Trends always change.

Yeah maybe that was a broad bold statement, I guess I just speak from history. I don't think android is at a point where one individual device can challenge an iphone or an ipad. Maybe it'll get there eventually, but apple has already ingrained itself as a maker of excellent, reliable products and right now and at least for the foreseeable future, they are the trend setter. I don't anticipate that people are going to be referring to phones as "android killers" for a very very long time. Maybe one day, yes, but I don't think it's anytime soon.

"iPad" is synonymous with "tablet" to most people. Apple didn't necessarily invent the genre, but Apple did basically invent the interface that we use on EVERY "modern" tablet. Android differs in many areas, but many things that Apple introduced on a wide scale are industry standard. Being in that position allows Apple to dictate the pricing norms.

Its tough to sell tissue for $2 more a box than Kleenex.

The Xoom is a great piece of hardware, but 3.0 isn't ready for prime-time, maybe it will be by the end of summer? Honeycomb aside, I'll definitely check out the Asus, but the Playbook is what I'm really looking at next.

People buy the iPad because of the name. Its a social status symbol. I know MANY MANY people that have an iPad and regret buying it. they have no real use for it except for playing a game or two once in a while and maybe facebook. But they have their phone, be it iPhone or not and just don't have a use for it.
I own an iPad. I did not buy it for status nor do I regret it. Every person I know who own one shares the same story.

Exactly, just go to even vzw.com > hover over Phones and Devices. Under phones, you'll see: "iPhone / Smartphones / Feature Phones", and Internet Devices has: "iPad / Netbooks"... THE XOOM ISN'T EVEN LISTED IN A CATEGORY!!! And VZW is the only carrier of the 3G/4G Xoom, what sense does this make? Either way, in the average consumers eye, there is no company or product that can go neck and neck with the iPad or Apple right now. A lot of people may yell at me for saying the Xoom can whoop the iPad, and I will agree because I own the wifi Xoom... but the person who just sees a bunch of numbers for the storage, and has no clue about 3.0 vs. iOS, will go with the iPad because they know the iPad, it's been around for over a year... Only people who know Android and know what it can do, and eventually become, are willing to save up and shell out the money for a first gen device that isn't working 100% (and theres some people who would be willing to get the device, but don't want to shell out the money, which is no problem either)

I don't own one, however I do know two people who bought an Ipad and if given the choice they would not do it again. I also know several others who love their Ipad.

My closest friend in fact refers to it as one of his "toys". He dosn't use it much and preffers his laptop. He has told me several times he shouldn't have bought it.

This is the main reason I haven't gotten an Ipad or an android tab. I just don't see the point when I have a PC with dual 22 inch monitors, a nice laptop and a Droid X with a pretty large screen for a phone. I just don't see a "fit" for my needs with a tablet.

Screen size....maybe thats another appeal to the iPad for ppl that have/had iPhones. Cuz I have a Droid X and I wanted a tablet for ebooks mostly. Looking at the Android Market for an ebook reader and saw some sample pics on my phone; the screen is a nice size for reading ebooks.

What I'm interested in is the HTC and some other Android tablet that uses the pen. I can see that being useful.

@bazar6

Yea the iPhone has its own category. I think thats mostly due to it being on Verizon for the first time ever. On AT&T the iPhone is lumped in with all the other smartphones.

That is wild for the Xoom to not be in ANY category tho.

Part of the problem may have been that the price point of the Motorola XOOM was just too high. The other part is all of Apple's devoted and loyal followers (zealots)

I would love to own a Motorola XOOM but they priced it way out of my budget range.

I would love a tablet, but I'm not going to buy one at the prices now. They're more or less an expensive luxury. Some people may find real use for it, but some like myself would just like to have one as a toy. Which is why I wont buy one; I don't have real uses for one to justify a purchase.

Let's see Motorola...

At Best Buy the Xoom is displayed at the back of the store in the far display corner behind the external hard drive section facing the wall. While the iPad display is never more than 50 feet from the entrance on the main isle as you enter a Best Buy.

They ran nonsensical commercials that showed a guy getting swallowed by a floating pod. Inside this floating pod he plays a game. Umm.. OK. But wait! There was another moronic ad. Another dude is swallowed by the same floating pod and he plays some music and uploads a picture of himself holding a fish. No clear product shots, no real view of the UI, no details about basically anything. I knew more about the floating pod experience than the Xoom! Really. How much did those commercials cost?

They sold the cellular network version ONLY for over a month. In relative terms it's the version that most consumers were LEAST interested in, as proven by the fact that the similarly spec'd iPad version (the 3G, 32GB version) is the least popular already with consumers. And let's not even mention that flash and the SD card slots were not functional.

Then they waited... They waited and didn't announce a date of release until AFTER the iPad2 is launched before selling the WiFi only model at a price that was acceptable (but most certainly not exceptional) and still missing capabilities. They basically waited until the bulk of their potential buyers purchased the iPad2 and then they released the Xoom.

Who are the troglodytes that are running Motorola?
What in the world are they smoking?

For the record, I have a Xoom WiFi and I use it daily. I think it's a great product compared to the iPad2. I used my fiancées iPad for a year prior and I like the tablet experience I just don't like how Apple makes you use their products (manditory iTunes).

Got iPad 2 Over Xoom

It was a easy choice for me. Its not just because Apple started this wave of tablets coming but I really like it over any other tablet out. The support available is another big plus. If anything goes wrong I hate that at times I have to call Motorola or HTC and set up sending it out to them because they can't fix it over the phone. With Apple I take my device to any of the stores near me (the last 3 years or so I lived in different states and still had one nearby) and have it fixed or replaced on the spot. Sometimes I leave it there a few hours but I am able to have my laptop working how it should before the end of the day. No, dealing with packaging or sending the device in and waiting for it shipped back.
Another big deal is the applications available for the Apple devices. For productivity or work the apps lean in Apple's favor.
Will I ever get a different tablet? Maybe. As much as I enjoy my iPhone 4 I now use my HTC Thunderbolt as my primary device. Android is and will get better and better. But for now, the iPad 2 was the better choice...for me at least.

Xoom...

Well I checked out the xoom at the verizon store and it was quick... a lot quicker than the galaxy tab. But that price...

iPad users drive priuses, wear birkenstock sandals (with socks of course), and live in expensive condos in large metropolitan areas, and let their kids only watch PBS. (take it easy... I'm kidding!)
