International travel with Razr Maxx

Italy Sim Card

Thanks Beefchopper. Another question. There are specific sim cards advertised on Amazon that are supposed to be "for Italy" from UNO and TIM. Would it be better to get one of these rather than an "international" sim card? P.S. I am not going to go driving around Italy to phone stores looking for a sim card. If I cannot get this at the airport when I land then I will just avoid using the phone except for emergencies.

This will give you the information on the prepaid carriers for Italy: Italy You can compare their rates to what you get on the international card. Make sure to look at data - that's the big difference. I chose Wind because it gives me 1GB for one month for 9 euros and I can shut it off until the next time I arrive there.

This is a great source on prepaid data in Italy: http://www.prepaidgsm.net/en/italia/data_italy.php

Thanks for all the great info! Now, as we await JB OTA, I hope all will work as anticipated! Thanks so much!!!

Razr MAXX in Kuwait

Hey everyone. Brand new to the forum and I have really learned a lot from this thread. However, I have one specific problem that I need help with. I'm sure bsweetness can answer this one I'll take all the help I can get.

So I arrived in Kuwait, picked up a VIVA prepaid SIM, had it activated, and put it in my RAZR MAXX. I get full bars a an "H" in place of the 4G symbol and can place calls for about a minute, then I get an error stating that com.android.phone has failed. I then lose all connectivity and this error continues to pop up over and over again until the VIVA SIM is removed. This happens every time I start the phone with the VIVA SIM.

now there only other thing I noticed is that the SIM looks slightly different from my Verizon SIM (see attached photo). The Verizon SIM is the one on the left with the smaller looking "chip".

Anyone have any idea what is going on and how to fix this?

First if all, I don't think it has anything to do with the physical differences in the sim card.

I haven't seen that problem myself but it seems to be somewhat common according to what I see googling it. One possible thing to try is:

-From the home screen, tap the Menu key.
-Tap Settings.
-Tap Call Settings (aka Call, Phone, or Phone Settings)
-Tap Reject With Message (aka Ignore with Message)

Hi. I looked through this threat but was unable to find an answer so I may have just missed it. I just purchased a droid razr maxx with a clean ESN and removed the 4g sim card and did a factory reset. I used the bypass method to get past the screen the phone gets stuck on asking to activate sim and I essentially have the phone running in an iPod touch mode. I'm leaving for Madrid in a week and was wondering if I will be able to put an international sim card in and just follow the steps mentioned on this thread to activate it without having setup the phone with the 4g sim card in it. Or would I have to have to have setup the phone with the sim card in and then removed it.

I don't know if it's a silly question but just wanted to cover my bases and ask before I'm out of the country and have no choice to use the 4g sim card in it. Thanks!

Jazz, you are right... I don't think that question has been asked yet. I am not certain whether it would need to be activated with a Verizon sim prior to using a foreign sim but my best guess is no because essentially when you go through the process of activating the foreign sim, it is basically re-activating the phone on a completely different network, carrier and plan. Bsweetness probably knows the answer for certain but, to me, it doesn't make sense that it would have to be previously activated.

I can't say that I am positive of the answer for the Razr as I ended up buying a Galaxy Note 2 but can tell you my experience with that one. I did set it up on Verizon and used it in the US for months before travelling to Italy. Once kin Italy, I put in a sim from an Italian cell provider and was able to use the phone for voice and data without a problem. I'm not sure what your hesitation is about setting it up in the US first. I don't think that would cause a problem as it didn't for me. Just remember, if you want to be able to get data when in Spain the phone needs to be set with APN data for the carrier whose sim card you use. I doubt that was pre-programmed into the Razr as it certainly was not into Verizon's version of the Galaxy Note 2. You will need to find and enter that information yourself, I would expect.

I think my hesitation was just whether there would be any extra hoops to jump through to use it in Spain if I've already activated it here in the US on Verizon. Right now I use my Galaxy Nexus. If I do activate the Razr Maxx, can I just put my 4G sim from my GNex in there and activate it, and would I be able to just jump between the phones by putting the sim card back in the other? Thanks!

Oh yeah. Just simply pop in your sim and have it run through the typical on screen setup. Again, this is assuming the phone isnt stolen or blocked from activation...if it has then you may run into problems. Just try it. But as long as the phone is from the same US carrier and is clean, you should be fine to activate the maxx and switch between the two phones.

Cool, thank you. I did a run of the ESN before I paid the guy for the phone and it was clean for activation. Do you (GotnFX) by chance have any experience taking a razr activated by verizon and putting a forein sim card in (with proper APN set up of course) like beefchopper had with his Note 2?
