Is this just a problemed device?

^You have a year warranty. Just return it for a new one & see if you have the same issues.

the phone is purchased through a 3rd party importer into Canada, so returning it to manufacturer is not possible

I strongly believe your phone is defective. That's bad that you can't return it. I have D2G for about 5 months now. I brought this phone to Canada and Europe. Used all technologies, CDMA, GSM, Edge and UMTS, and all temp range from 5F (in Montreal) to 95F (my home town). I didn't have any problem. I used Fission ROM for a month then returned to Stock ROM. My phone is stable as rock with, without root. I also experienced reboot several times but that was because of defective software. Not by phone's issue.

I am very heavy user attached to D2G for over 18 hr a day. I check all my office email with this device. I also use it for my primary Navi device so, I sometimes use it for more than 10 hr straight. Most recent usage was for my drive from Prague all the way to Frankfurt in Single day. While Navi was running, email, browser and so on were running under the hot sun. Never rebooted.

root it rom it

This is not the answer to everything and I do get tired of seeing it.

sent from somewhere...

I have been reading up a lot on the problems I have and it seems like no one really has any true fix to them, other than reboot when it happens..

I feel so lost

Rooting and ROMs are an option you can use for your phone to customize it, they are not solutions to issues with the phone.

I really like this phone as well, and would like to get it working properly... I think I'm going to just buy another one

Rooted mine with z4root, froze most of the bloatware, made a backup just in case, used set cpu to tweak just a lil, and am using go launcher ex, because I wanted more customization without romming. My phone used to reboot using the slide unlock once a day, and randomly once every few days. Since root a couple days ago it has random rebooted once, and I think its just when the processor is doing too much because launchers take a lot of ram. Android is supposed to close other programs when ram needed, but I don't think these globals do that right. Hence reboots from overloads I think, could be wrong, still kinda new to this. But rooting seems to have helped mine a lot, as long as I don't do anything I'm not comfortable with yet, like flashing a rom.

That sucks. I thought Moto would honor it regardless since it hasn't been out a year.

they won't if it is not purchased directly through a cellphone carrier that carries that particular model(in my case verizon) :(

I will look more into this as well... thanks for your reply

No rooting is not a solution for all, I was acyually considering sending my phone back to motorola, but didn't like that there was no guarantee if my device would come back better or worse, or if they would trade it for something to make me happy, so I rooted.

For the signal problem,I used to have some for sure and at first restarting phone may return a strong signal again. But soon, I found there was no need to reboot again and again. Just turn on air plane mode and turn off, your phone may re gain signal. That's quite faster than rebooting. Hope this method is useful if you still have the signal problem.

For the wifi connection problem, I have a strong feeling that it might be some internet congested traffic that causes it. I live in China and so many chinese guys use the same wifi, which lead to no traffic to my phone. Other people kinda rob it away using software. So, if possible, think about it and change a place to have a try.

Have you considered flashing Fission? For me, the bettery performance improves a lot even though it has some random reboot and forcecloses on certain apps. It may fix some of your problem. If hardware malfunction exists, considering your case, change a another phone will be better.
