Issue with the Google Messenger app after recent app update?

I haven't used the Messenger app. I was using Textra and was having some problems so I switched to using Messenger+ a month or so ago and like it fine. No issues with the log clearing. What are the pros and cons with Messenger vs Messenger+?

For the folks with the unread text message count issue, look for the new 2.1.163 app update. It seems to correct the issue. 2.1.163, dated 3/3/2017.
