Keyboard apps

I like swipe because it seems to be forgiving. However, I see no navigation keys. So that, if you want to make an insertion or manually correct a mistake, you have to put that target exactly in the right place which can be difficult to do, which is where my frustration lies. So I am looking for a keyboard app that has navigation.

tpal, did you ever find one? I am looking for the exact same thing - a keyboard that has navigation arrows.

SwiftKey Beta is a really nice replacement. It's got the long press for other characters and has pretty amazing word prediction; it will even save phrases that you previously used and incorporates them into the word prediction. The one thing that it lacks, however, is multi-touch support, which is really nice in the stock keyboard.

I don't know If I'll ever get into swype ... but I was talking more of actual keyboard replacements (Download: HTC IME Keyboard v19 - Droid Life: A Droid Community Blog). This seemed to be one of the more highly reviewed ones, but it's not in the app store ... not a fan of installing apps not in the store for updates and such.

Give Swype a bit of time and you will wonder why texting was never that easy in the first place.

My wife thought she hated Swype until I showed her how to use it properly and now she is hooked on it. She's actually gotten faster than me. =/

If you hold your finger in the bottom left corner on the I with the little swype through it and drag to the symbol key you will get the keyboard with nav keys. Just press ABC to go back.

Thanks to all for these replies.

I do use swype a great deal and know about swyping from the i to the sym for the screen with arrows. But there are some times when the regular multi-touch keyboard is a better option and that is why I am looking for an alternative to it that has the arrows right on the main keyboard rather than having to switch to another screen and then back again.

To get 2 letters the same, I do a cursive " o" but you can also trace a " u " , on the letter and it will recognize it as two. If you are coming from above - Say you are on the i and you want to do 2 l's, then start on the i, go to the l, and just make the slightest movement back toward the I , without leaving the l key, then go right back to the lower part of the l, it is almost like you are making a head fake ( in basketball ) and it will read it as a double.

+1 for smart keyboard pro...

Downloaded Smart Keyboard Trial version and when I went to activate it, this is the first things I saw:

"This input method may be able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers. It comes from the application Smart Keyboard. Use this input method?"

No thanks, uninstalling.

Love the HTC Keyboard and they have a FOYO updated one that works great with 2.2. I have been using this for 5 mos and love it. I tried SWYPE but like this much better.

ALL alternate keyboards give that warning PRECISELY because they are a keyboard (and thus, in the perfect spot to be a key logger). If the permissions they want (other than that warning) are non-threatening and its one that many people give good comments on (here, the market, appbrain, google searches), then you are more likely to be fine.

Fair enough, but I don't think it's worth the risk when the stock keyboard is mostly sufficient. Thoughts?

That's the lovely part about the Android OS.. choices. I can run the HTC keyboard on my D1 and have the D2 stockbkeyboard, while others on the forum use other keyboards. Its all about what works for you on your phone, not what I want on your phone or what anybody else wants (bloatware barely is an exception since rooting can even remove them and again.. its a choice to root).
