Limiting what Gallery Displays

I've done my searching and can't find anything close to this, so here goes.

Is there a way to restrict the folders that Gallery uses? I don't want to see the album art from all my music folders showing up in Gallery. In fact, if I could have different Gallery shortcuts to view different sets of subfolders, that would be very sweet.

Barring that, is there a better image viewing/display app? I want something to use as a quick portfolio viewer.

Thanks.

I've seen in other threads that you create a file called .nomedia in any folders that you don't want to show up in the gallery. If you search for ".nomedia" you will see other threads that talk about this.

On the sd card, I created a separate file for one set of pictures and the Gallery had that come up separately. Ditto with B&B Gallery and Photo Burst. Unfortunately I do have some folders from apps that have files the Gallery reads.

any folder with a "." in front of the name will not show in the gallery..
i.e:
Pictures would show up but .Pictures would not

i just made a '.private' folder and my gallery wont display it..

in fact, even root explorer wont display the pics should someone find the folder manually, the phone needs to be mounted for the pics to show
