locked phone but new text shows on front screen

i don't understand why while using the lock feature on my Incredible when i recieve a text it shows up on the screen before i unlock the phone. isn't the point of locking it to keep prying eyes from seeing your stuff? Is there a way to prevent the contents of the text from showing up before unlocking while still being notified that you have recieved a message? thanks.

Are you using a downloaded app for texting or the built in one? I know on my Moto Droid there is no way to see a text on the lock screen if you are not using a custom app. SMS Popup has a "Privacy Mode" option that makes the contents of a text not visible until after you unlock. I think handcent has an option like that too, but I'm not sure.

EDIT: I just checked and in Handcent goto settings -> notification settings -> popup settings -> Privacy mode. So yeah, if you are using handcent, which seems to be the app of choice for most people, that's how you fix it.
