I used Handcent for a long time but it seemed to get slow. I didn't like the delay. I switched to Go SMS and have loved it.

Give them both a try and see what you like best.

I use ChompSMS and love it. I have had no trouble with it. When I had my Droid Eris I used Handsent and had all sorts of problems. Switched to ChompSMS and never had trouble been using it ever since.
