Anyway to disable the graphical smilies without third party mms app?

I have found where these smilies are stored (in the .apk) but in order to edit I need read/write permissions to the system\app directory. Is there anyway to achieve this without root?

I gotta say the GN's smilies are the best I've seen on any phone... But the entire idea of them suck because what looks great on your phone might look stupid in text on someone elses.
