So I hope that anyone reading this, who might be considering purchasing anything Apple from Verizon, with insurance, will think twice and look for insurance elsewhere.
Thank you for letting me rant and rave and get this off my chest!dancedroid

Wow sorry to hear about your crappy situation. Its amazing that the IPhone would be considered "other" and not a smart phone. I wonder if like the discount you spoke of, apple had something to do with the insurance. Either way that really sucks.

It's a little late now, but AppleCare+ is a much better option for Apple products IMO. Only thing is that I don't believe it covers lost or stolen phones.
I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune.
Hi guys...I really need to post this about my experience with Verizon and Asurion so that hopefully no one else will get into this boat I'm in. So here is what went down...my kids and I got our upgrades on April 1st. My daughter really wanted an iPhone so I let her get one. First I questioned Verizon as to why I did not get the loyalty/employer discount on her phone and was told that Apple sets the prices blah blah no discount...OK I can live with it. Well, now here is where the my current story starts, I asked about insurance and when I asked how the program works the Verizon ASSociate explained the replacement program and then told me that EACH OF THE PHONES would carry a $45 deductible...I thought that was reasonable and accepted the insurance for the iPhone and our 2 Razr Maxx. Well the inevitable happened...the screen on the iPhone cracked so I opened a case with Asurion and today, after waiting the required time for review, I continued the process only to be stopped dead in my tracks...they wanted $169.00 for the deductible!! On a $199.00 phone and that does not even guarantee a new phone...I was floored! I called them and was told that maybe the program changed...what??really??? So I went to the Verizon website and found the information on the insurance...the Apple iPhone is NOT listed as a smart phone it is listed as "other devices"
NO WAY am I paying that deductible for a used phone...I am going to have to get the screen replaced at a local repair service. But not before I call the Verizon Store and corporate and give them a piece of my mind...maybe 2 or 3 pieces! I was completely misinformed and mislead into getting this insurance...it might be worth it for other phones but NOT the iPhone. Verizon needs to be upfront with customers who purchase Apple from them and tell them the deductible is so high. I am not even sure if this constitutes any consumer crime/fraud or whatever you might call it so if anyone out there has knowledge of that I would love to know.
So I hope that anyone reading this, who might be considering purchasing anything Apple from Verizon, with insurance, will think twice and look for insurance elsewhere.
I will look into it...I wonder if the phone being less than 1 month I might be able to get it

How to get AppleCare+
- Add it to your shopping cart during the checkout process when you purchase your new iPhone.
- Buy it within 30 days of your iPhone purchase at Apple Retail (requires a Genius Bar appointment, inspection of the iPhone & proof of purchase).
Normally, yes you can. But.....
So it appears to me that you would not in this case since it is damaged. It's worth a try anyway to see what they say.
That said, I'm surprised they let you get insurance through Asurion. I used an upgrade back in November to get a 4S, and my insurance through Asurion was automatically canceled. They said I needed to go directly through Apple for warranty issues. They also said if I wanted anything beyond the basic warranty, I'd need AppleCare+. AppleCare+ is only $99, ups the warranty to two years, and covers up to two replacements due to accidental damage with a deductible of only $49. It's far and away a better deal than Asurion as it's cheaper than paying their monthly price, and it comes with a lower deductible. That's what they should have directed you to do. I'd guess that Asurion has the iPhone listed under "other devices" because people typically go through Apple for warranty issues, and because the iPhone is more expensive for them to obtain for replacements.
Does anyone really think to phone companies pay more than 10 or 20 dollars for these devices. I sure don't!
