So I didn't get the birmingham one. But this is what I learned, and gathered/deduced info from this thread.
1. The cards are probably hidden at the beginning of the day the coordinates go out. If not then, than right when the 30 min warning goes out.
2. If you walk into a place and there is not a large (professional TV sized) camera, you are in the wrong place. This camera will most likely be set up when the 30 minute warning goes out, so check your number one spot-- no cameras, go somewhere else. There should be people with camcorders as well.
3. There are probably 10 or so Verizon employees associated with each location, and they have coordinated with the staff of the location. If there's no where for them to hide (or park), then they aren't there. If you're at a location, and the local staff seems annoyed and confused at your loitering/presence, then it's probably not that location.
4. Public access. No pay for admissions locations. Also, probably smaller locations, because there is less staff to coordinate with, and it's probably less of a hindrance.
5. Near downtown. Seems to be the trend.
The morning that your droid is supposed to be hitting, here's what I suggest:
Drive around to various possible locations. Look for the verizon people-- They're wearing blue button-ups without a verizon logo. Go inside, talk up the desk staff. You can probably get a feel for which ones have obviously no idea about what's going down, and which ones have a potential to be hiding Verizon employees.
When the 30 minute call goes out:
Drive to your first guess- No cameras, no dice. Move on to the next location.
Also, and this is important: have a driver. In birmingham, the police knew about it and had squad-cars outside a few minutes after the coordinates released. You can't just double park your car real quick; if you have driver, you can get dropped off, and they can wait outside for a bit while you check.
If you don't get it, still drop by. They have lots of droid Xs there to play with, and you get a $20 giftcard for signing a photo release.
Talked to the guy who won-- He said he went near the south of I-20 (the entire city is south of I-20, but he went to within a few block of it) and waited till the coordinates hit.
Knowing this as well, here's why you probably won't get it.
-- If you worked at a museum, and verizon guys were setting this stuff up, wouldn't you text one of your friends and have them be standing outside the building? (by the way, it's a professional TV crew too, contracted. They might be able to text their friends too)
So hopefully these details will let one of you snag one of the few remaining phones, but do still drop by if it's been claimed. You'll get a free giftcard. (each person does. even under 18. Bring 4 extra people, and it's 100 dollars off your droid.) They give out more in giftcards than droids-- at least 50 cards were there.
Also, of unrelated topic: A verizon rep straight up recommended PDAnet for tethering. Not a joe blow who works at the booth in the mall-- probably a corporate guy. So even it seems unlikely that verizon has any policies about tethering apps-- I think they know about them, and are content to leave them alone for now.
