New here, question on using a D2 as a non phone device

I just found this place after getting a DX and returning it because I nearly bricked it. I didn't know what I was doing and neither did my friend who rooted the phone. Anyhoo, I just exchanged it for a D2 and I am pretty unsatisfied with the battery life, so I just decided to reactivate my Blackberry for phone and email use, and I am hoping to use the D2 as sort of a mini tablet pc, just for MP3, kindle, and free game apps as well as the camera and organizer features.

Are there any known problems with this? Is it legal? I don't see how it would be illegal seeing as how I own the device outright and I am not stealing anything. I really like the D2 as a gadget, and I simply utilize WiFi to download apps with my gmail account and browse the web. Opinions and (preferably) related facts would be most helpful.

It's completely legal. It's pretty much a mini computer

Question: if you knew you didn't know what you were doing how come continue rooting? did you do your research on how to root and the best way?

Well, first, it was a buy one get one deal at Verizon so my wife's DX was the phone we paid for and mine was free.

As for the rooting, I didn't root it my friend did, and at the time he made it sound like he really knew what he was doing. I soon realized that he didn't. He installed the Clockwork recovery mod and then couldn't remove it. Then I asked him to return the phone to it's out of box state so I could return it before it was bricked, because I saw him doing that very quickly. Then I go to return it and superuser was still installed. I got lucky that Verizon didn't realize the phone had been rooted. I think I will spend some time with the D2 as a non phone device and learn it inside and out, then maybe activate it once I really know what I am doing with it. As for now, I need a phone that lasts quite a bit longer than the 8-10 hours I was getting with the D2. I work weird hours and I need reliability without having to charge. BB Curve fits that bill.

well at least you know you have a phone that fits the bill.

however, i would like to suggest you read up on this forum about rooting and what you could do with your D2 and not your Curve. Android is a great OS and the future imo. Everyone here is helpful especially when it comes to "hacking" (we have a whole squad dedicated to helping in this department.

Glad you're happy with your BB, but the D2 would be a great device as well. Give it a shot if you can, you can still root without service. And just to let you know it's almost impossible to brick these devices, there's software you can get to reflash the phone to factory settings if all goes wrong (this happened to me and this is how i fixed it to get a CLNR

I went ahead and activated it. After a short break in, the battery is getting much better life. Going to a BB after having a droid is like moving from a ferrari to a ford escort, it just isn't the same. Glad I'm back in the Droid world!

Haha, glad to hear you decided to try out the Droid again.

Yea, I am pretty sure the BB is put up for good. I am getting crazy long battery life now that I stopped auto email sync. This phone is even better than the X imo. I love the speed and especially love how pocketable it is. This forum is what made me decide to give it a solid effort, and im glad I did.

Yep, I also have a D2; switched from a Storm 1. Ya do not know how many times I wish that my S1 had wifi so I could do what you were going to do with your D2. I bought the S1 thinking it would be like the iPod touch with a phone.

I will tell you this, if my D2 were to ring, I would not know how to answer it. It is my little tablet. Ha! It is rooted and I am learning how to write scripts. I started learning the Java Language and looking at the sample apps in the SDK to learn how to write small apps. I really like this "toy". (No offense to those who use it as a phone, I am just old and retired with time on my hands.)

To further improve battery life on your D2, I also highly recommend if you have any of those advanced task killers programs, delete them, they are battery wasters and they do not do what you think they will. The other thing I use that helps improve my battery life is a program called Juice Defender. I hope this helps too. Glad you decided to use the D2 instead of the BB. I couldn't imagine how that would have been a better arrangement. One thing you won't be doing is pulling the battery every hour. I'm a former BB user!

I couldn't handle the difference between the two, the Droid knocks the BB out of the park! I need to root it, but I don't have time this weekend to research properly. I stopped ATK from running and it did make a difference. I am getting great Battery life out of this phone, comparable to the DX. I did notice as well that my Blackberry required a few too many batt pulls.
