I guess my question was...is there a difference in hardware between the test and release phones .or just different bootloaders

Same hardware. Different settings in the OMAP processor from what I understand. No, we can't change it.

I asked because i remember when the bionic first came out people were rushing to try to unlock the boot loader...and I thought I read something about of they could find a signed engineering from it may help in achieving s-off....I know that's been quite a while ago and people understand more about the phone now so I was enquiring on it...guess I should rephrased my question and reasoning

Someone bricked their phone trying to flash the unlocked engineering bootloader to a release phone. And when I say bricked...I mean it has to be reflashed at the OMAP level which isn't going to happen.
