New Moto X Battery Tests Not Looking Great

Battery has never been a big concern of mine since I usually have easy access to outlets to charge. I need/want a new phone, but between the "phablet" type size and other issues it's looking like the Moto X2 isn't a good fit.

Honestly, I'm strongly leaning toward getting a discounted original Moto X. Too bad the DE for Verizon are done.

Considering I have to pay retail I'm looking for my next phone to last 3+ years...not seeing such a phone available [anywhere].
I tried that yesterday at Verizon while getting the parents upgraded to the iPhone 6, still $450 full price...

Hope real life use yield better results ... That being said I think Motorola knows what their doing. Has to be a reason there's such a small bump in battery - whether it's tweaks under the hood or the pending Android L and project Volta (or both). Motorola's support is second to none, they really stand behind their products and do whatever they can to be sure user experience is the best it can be (just look at the OG X camera improvements update after update). I know they can't push a new battery via OTA, but if battery life does become an issue I'm confident they'll do all they can to improve battery life.
With that, I still plan to get this device. While having a phone that lasts all day is great, having to charge mid-day isn't the end of the world (especially when $35 can get you an 8 hour bump in life in 15 minutes!). I have plenty of opportunities throughout my work day to charge my phone (heck, I DID have a Galaxy Nexus back in the day, so I'm no stranger to charging throughout the day LOL).
Enjoyed everything about the OG X except for the small form factor, so I am looking forward to the bigger second generation.

I'm always cautious when it comes to benchmarks and these custom looping tests. I look more to real world use than these. Not that I think Motorola couldn't have put a larger battery in this phone. I've seen several reviews and while they certainly don't rave about the batterylife, they all have said they get through a day. Of course that depends on the user. Heavy users will have worse results.

Engadget:
“ …Motorola managed to keep its word with regard to an all-day battery -- the X stuck with me for just over a day of on-and-off web
browsing, texting, Kindle reading, YouTube watching, Rdio streaming and Google Maps navigating.”

CNET:
According to our light Wi-Fi browsing test, the Moto X has acceptable but not exceptional battery life, which is probably the biggest black mark against it…. In regular mixed use it had no problem lasting for a waking day, though of course this will depend on what you're using it for.

TheVerge:
The Moto X lasted 8 hours and 44 minutes in our battery rundown test, which is a strong showing, and I was able to get a full day of use out of it before needing to juice up. It’s not as long-lasting as the LG G3, HTC One M8, or Galaxy S5, but it should be good enough for most people

Why not make a phone an extra mm thicker but give it maxx battery? I don't get this fad with razor thin phones, they aren't comfortable to hold and most people still put them in cases making them thicker anyways.

Another review is in and here are the comments regarding battery:

"I was often able to get about 16 hours off the charger and 4 hours on screen. And that was with both LTE and WiFi on AT&T’s network. That was also with the Moto 360 paired with it all day, and even without it paired I had similar results. So it’s not fantastic, but I think it’s still quite good."

If I can get 16 hours with 4 hours of SOT that'll be plenty for me personally ...

4 hours of screen time is horrible. It needs to be at least 8 hours.

My ideal is probably at least 20 hours of screen on time, so I can leave screen on while sitting on my desk/table and not have to hit a button to look at a message.

I'm sure the new X will have active display just like the old one. If that's the case then you won't need to hit the button to see messages. That's one of the features that I love.

I can't see how 4 hours SOT is terrible ... If I'm looking at my phone for more than 4 hours a day I think I've got issues other than the size of the battery in my phone!
But I know everyone has different needs/preferences, which is the beauty of Android - CHOICE

It really has nothing to do with how an individual person uses their device. If you're only getting 4 hours of screen on time that automatically equates to weak overall battery life. Today's smartphones should be averaging at least 7-8. (as the pic in the OP shows) Anything less is unacceptable imo.

Fair enough. But that's not a feature that's appealing to me - I prefer to look at everything in my universal message widget, which is why I'd rather just leave the screen on.

I've never really reached 4hr screen time to be honest. Not with any of my phones and up to my current s4 which has just about every battery saving app/mod I can do to it. I'm at about 25-35% of battery at the end of my day and probably get like 2.5-3hr of screen time. Though I do go to the dog park everyday for about 2hrs that has absolutely no consistent signal, so that comes into play.

Do you sleep???

Someone else said "I don't know why they don't just make them thicker and put a bigger battery in it because everyone uses a case anyway..."

You've seen the MotoX clear case, yes? Adds no appreciable bulk.
But if you use an Otter box...and if the MotoX was thicker to accommodate a battery... you'll be carrying a brick around.

I need about an HOUR of SOT time. At best. I have chargers at home, I have them at work, one in the car and a portable Anker. I don't care about battery life...
;)

Just one additional comment I found on battery life:

Gizmodo:
The new Moto X has a pretty average sized battery at 2300mAh, only a slight bump from the 2200 mAh battery in last year's model, and I was pretty concerned with how it would fare against the new, larger, and higher resolution display. Good news: I would generally get around 30 hours of battery life, and I'm a pretty heavy user. Do we wish it would last two days or longer so we could go a whole weekend without plugging in? Of course, but this is still right up there with other current flagship phones

Again, not tops, but appears to get through the "average" user's day without a problem.
