New OMAP 4 Series: Make or Break

All this boot loader encryption is just freakin nonsense. Just let the owner of the device do with it what he/she will. Could you imagine if they locked down the ability to install whatever OS you want on your PC? For that matter if FiOS or Comcast locked their boxes down to work only with LG or Sharp televisions? It may sound like a stretch but there is no difference. You, the consumer, paid for the device and now own said device. To deny the owner of any retail product, electronic or otherwise, to modify it to their liking is ridiculous.

Well, my 1-yr early upgrade isn't until February, so not much of a decision for me.

Hopefully a sweet LTE-compatible phone is out then. I think at the point with speed and ram, along with (hopefully) good battery management and I won't have much need to root.

But I will be disappointed if Droid Pro is not LTE and has a locked bootloader.

Exactly. It IS an open source system, correct? But as it stands i doubt moto is gonna change it in the near future,

Depends. If Motorola locks things down like apple, I may become an HTC/Samsung fan.....
I love my rootable/hackable droid!

I mean you say that now but... next year they'll have something better. And that will always be true. You just have to settle eventually. For now? Upgrading Eris > X is more than enough, and ill upgrade 2 years from now. or one... idk which. Ya know?

Yea but this rapid acceleration in mobile technology that we've seen in the last 3 years is about to hit a roadblock, and the DroidPro is going to be very close to that block. The issue is a lack in progress in battery technology...it just isn't there to support hardware any more advanced than what the DroidPro can provide. Even on 45nm technology I don't think you're going to get past 2ghz for quite some time without some new battery tech. No freakin' way...

The DroidPro won't last forever, but I think it will be a super powerful phone for a much longer period of time than the typical phone at this point. There just isn't anything out there to push hardware specs past what is about to be offered.

I'd bet big money that the Pro will be around for quite a long while, much longer than we're used too anyway.

I agree. However I dont like how you referenced the X as a typical phone. It still is a cutting-edge device, even though it is somewhat less powerful system. I think for most users the X will be enough. Would everyone explain the whole need for the Pro? I guess I don't get the necessity.

Bro, yea it's a competitive phone but it's not more advanced than other phones on the market right now. Comparable is the only term that should be used, compared to the specs of the Pro it is much more advanced than anything that has been discussed today. As it stands no one else has an answer to it at all yet that I've seen. I mean honestly what more could a phone hardware wise do? Not a whole hell of a lot actually...

Would everyone explain the whole need for the Pro? I guess I don't get the necessity.
Necessity? There is no necessity here...food, water, shelter...those are necessity. The Pro is a want, not a need. It's not a requirement, or a precursor of...it's simply cutting edge and the most technologically advanced phone announced at this point in time. Who the hell wouldn't want one...(except those of us like me that are pissed about locked bootloaders and refuse to buy if it is in fact, intact.:icon_evil:)

Right now Motorola is no longer on my list of preferred manufacturers for Android handsets. Unless they change their policies I will do whatever I can to steer people away from Motorola and to a more friendly Android. Regardless is the Droid Pro is a 2 Ghz OMAP 4430 that makes coffee and drives for you, if it is locked down like the Droid X I will not go near it. HTC, Samsung and other manufacturers are going to be making comparable devices and if any of those are as root friendly with open bootloaders as the current gen phones they have now they will get my business. Motorola has royally screwed up on this one.

Agree. Their biggest fans just took a step back for a second. They better pay attention to the bridges they decide to burn.

Well I'm locked up till july 2011, so whatever is the hot new **** then is what I get ;). The droidx is the phone i would get over the droid because I never use the keyboard, It just makes it bulkier for me. THeres nothing on android atm that I need any more performance than my droid.

As far as locked bootloaders, only a small percentage of droid users are rooted or have a custom rom.

Waiting till Droid 3 or whatever comes out winter 2011. I love my Droid and a slight speed increase is not worth an upgrade IMO.
