No animated gifs???

Don't know when it happened, maybe the big update, but I was just able to view animated gif's on my Droid. This may be old news, but thought I'd let the forum know.

My droid decided to power off or lock with a blank screen - either way I had to pull the battery right before lunch...Coincidence?? What gif were you able o look at...web or emailed picture??

I just tried after a power cycle with no luck - I used the web and tried a couple I had stored that worked on my Dare.

Bummer! Thanks for the tease - how much do I owe you :)

PNG replaced GIF.

For one thing, GIF only supported 8 bit (256 colors), while PNG is more modern in that respect as it supports 24 and even 32 bit color.

Astro (sorry I spelled it wrong earlier) is a file manager app.

I just saved an attached gif to my SD card. I tried using Astro and Gallery to view it, and it is still (no animation). I tried viewing the message again under the default Messaging app, and it is also still. However, when I view it with the Handcent messaging app, I get the animation. So apparently Handcent supports animated gifs.

Almost every single web forum still uses .gifs as smilies. :icon_ banana: For example that won't show up on a droid as moving.

Exactly. That is why this is so frustrating. Most every other phone out there supports animated gifs. My Samsung Glyde (a piece of crap non-smartphone) which I had before moving to the Droid also had animated gif support.

The argument that animated gif images are old technology is not a valid reason not to include it. Its still being used actively and commonly throughout the internet and text messages, which is all the reason anyone should need to justify having it.

Other phones can do it, why can't Android?

Yes, Handcent does support animated gifs, but it has issues with them sometimes. I saved an animated gif image composed of a slideshow of bears. I noticed Handcent did not play all the frames when I tried to view it through that app.

But that doesn't really feel good enough. We still don't have support in the gallery or the browser.

This is very disappointing. I mean I guess it's not a huge deal but you'd think the Droid would have some solution, app or otherwise to view animated gifs. Does anyone know of any possible way to do it? I tried using handcent to view an animated gif I downloaded from the web but it said the gif was too large and it couldn't render it.

PNG does not support annimation so in that respect, its no better than a HQ JPEG in my opinion.

Please know what your talking about before opening your mouth.... png does support animation silly.

Here is a sample to show you. :)
