noobie that wants to root his phone, but confused

im a noobie to smart phones and obviously the motorola droid. this is my first smartphone and im really impressed with it with a few exceptions. one thing that i like is that i can have the internet on my laptop and in the palm of my hand. thru this site i have learned about tethering to my comp using pda net, wich is a great app. and i have also learned about things that the phone can do, but the carrier had locked me out of. the more that i have read about what all that i can do with the phone the more that i want to root it so that i have all this stuff available. i am a truck driver and this phone is my only comucation to the "outside world" as a matter of fact i am using it right now to connect to this site, so i cant afford to screw this thing up.

i have been looking at the forum and i am totaly confused about rooting and the differtent roms that are available to me. i am not as computer savy as i once was 7 years ago before i started driving. is there a "manual, cheat sheet or something" that can explain all this to me i want to be able to change screens, fonts, operations and themes as well as give me the features that i want/need. i feel like i have jumped into a giant knot but cant find the start of the string to figure out what the heck i am doing. if anyone can help i would appreciate it. btw the phone has the 2.1 update

Welcome! The second link in JCo352's post will be your guide to rooting. If you need help just post and someone will assist.

:welcome: to the Droid Forums. I tell everyone unless your sure you know what you're doing, then don't do it.

But people do it anyway. We do have a rescue squad if you should get stuck along the way. I wish I could point you to an "easy" 1 step method, like when we had DMupdater, but since you're probably on 2.1 it's a little more involved then that.

All I can tell you is to go to the hacking sections, look at the developers threads, and see what you would like to do. I believe the easiest way AFTER you've rooted is with ROM Manager. It will allow you to pick from several different ROMs.

So basically that's what you got to do. Root, then after rooting get Rom Manager from the Market. I'm probably going to do it myself this week. Maybe tomorrow.

I was in the same situation. Confused with all of the different threads and options. I spent the past week checking out videos, watching and rewatching and trying to learn. The videos were a huge help in understanding the steps. I finally rooted yesterday. Today I ran into a problem and was able to get some help from one of the rescue squad members here (thanks again mwhartman).
I'd suggest reading the mentioned threads, maybe google some videos and make sure you are aware of what you are doing.
Good Luck!!!

PLEASE don't flame me here for this very newbie question. But what is the necessity to root? i read the article on what "rooting" means, i just got this thing 2 days ago, what else can make this better by rooting? i surf the net great, text awesome, and can load up all apps quickly and run them just fine. Please enlighten me, hell i might try it if it is worth it. just confused on exactly what it does better....by rooting.

Read this thread on jrummy roms and look at all the extra features your phone could have http://www.droidforums.net/forum/jr...mix-v0-7-cyanmod-5-0-6-2-5-theme-choices.html thats just 1 example!

wow, that's a lot of stuff! which i dont know what it all means :), but sounds good. by themes do you mean you can have more than 3 screens? i like that. does rooting let you surf the net faster? or more like open up apps and things faster...

I dont think there is any speed difference on the net but yes on opening apps up and more home screens ...you can send me over a pm if you ever decide to root your phone....

what i do knoiw is that rooting the phone gives you "master" access to your phone, so that you can do things like using your phone as a wifi router to create a mobile hotspot, which verizon makse you buy a seperate device at $60/mo or pay $30/mo to tether to your computer for mobile internet thats one example. thanks to all for helping me it wasnt more than 5 minutes after i posted the first time that i got about 3 or 4 responses. im working at the moment but i will read thru and find out what i want to do. i will definatley learn as much as i can before i try doing anything cause like i said i cant afford to mess up my only phone and a $600 investment:)

wolfman, i hear you on that. although i am intrigued about doing it. i cant afford to screw up my phone. i really regreted (at first) :) getting it, but once it's paid for, the monthly will be the same because my web usage was averaging 35-40 bucks on my ENV. so ....dont want to screw things up with voiding the warranty.

Yeah you can see in your first thread how the people here are so self-involved that they just have no time to chip in and help a fellow droider. :D

Welcome and do your research and you won't be disappointed in your choice of phones.
