Not so great while traveling in Mexico

I switched to DroidX from a Blackberry and have loved it in every way except when I travel in Mexico, which I need to do for work a lot. I have Verizon and nothing has changed except the phone. I would have thought the coverage would have been comparable, but it wasn't.
Is there a setting I should try next time or do I need to pull out my BB for travels?

Droid X is not a world phone. Blackberry is. Droid Pro and Droid 2 global has gsm and cdma so will work in other countries but the X is out of luck
