Notification Light Doesn't Always Work

I have found that doesn't always light. It seems to happen when the phone has been in stand-bye for quite some time.

I assume that the phone is in "sleep mode" at this point. Does anyone know, will notification light not work when the phone is in this mode?

I have a Droid but my notification lights do blink when my phone is in stand-bye /sleep mode.
