notification sounds

The best way to have custom ringtones and alert sounds is to create it yourself. Download from the Market the app RingDroid and cut and snip a song ( or any recorded sound) you may have. Save the file by hitting the floppy disk icon. SAVE AS Type: Notification. The default is ringtone so you do have to arrow down to select the notification option.

Then you go to your Messaging app, hit Menu, Settings. Scroll down to find Notification Settings, Select Ringtone. What you created in RingDroid will now be listed along the generic stock sounds. Select your new sound.

You can also use this app to create sounds for Alarms. I was tired of waking up to the Rooster alarm so I created my own. It is one of the best app there is!
This worked GREAT! Thank you! The Ringdroid app is free and worked great. I found the already-downloaded music file, edited it, then saved it as a Notification. It them prompted me if I wanted to make it the default for Notifications (texts), and I did. Works great! This is exactly what I wanted.

Ringo lite or Pro let's you assign to individual contacts as well as default text tone. Very cool for those of us who want to know whether to bother looking or not. I've got started red alert set for my wifes text tone, and a different one for each child, family member and friends

I have a question. Does anyone know how to turn off the notification sound for gmail but leave notifications on for text messages? I came from a Droid X to the Razr Maxx, and could do this on my X, but can't figure out again how to make this happen?

If it can be done you woud go into your gmail settings and uncheck email notifications and than select labels to notify and make your adjustments.

Set the notification sound in the GMail app to Silent. This way, you still get GMail notifications in your notification bar and the LED, but no sound. Always set notifications on a per app basis; using the blanket sound from the settings menu for your RAZR is pretty cumbersome and heavy handed. This way, you can have separate notification sounds for texts, GVoice, IM, Calendar, etc.

But I cannot find any notification settings in gmail settings. Is it really there? If so, it is very well camoflauged.

OK in your gmail app, tap your options key, three horizontal lines on the bottom left of your device, more, settings, tap on your account, example (whomever@gmail.com) scroll down to notifications, un select it. You're done :)

Hope this helps.

They actually are really well camouflaged (Google made it a little too hard to find them, imo). In GMail app, Menu --> More --> Settings --> select account --> Labels to notify. Select your label (should be Inbox and Priority Inbox) and set the ringtone to silent (make sure you do it for all labels available). I have mine set to Silent, Never, Notify once for new email (means the ringtone is Silent, and vibrate is set to Never). This will make it so GMail emails show up in your notification bar (and trigger your notification LED), but they never make a noise or vibrate the phone.

This will make it so there's no notification at all instead of simply silencing the notification. If you do this, new GMail emails will not show up in your notification bar. The method I outlined will have them show up, but they'll be silent. Like a really stinky fart that makes no noise.
