Nova Launcher

No you do not need to be rooted! You can download and install like any other non-market app. With root you can have it show widgets in the app drawer like stock does but that's the only difference. I am not rooted and I love it.

Been using Nova for a few weeks now and it's great. Once in awhile it chokes but the ability to have a landscape homescreen, 6x4 grid, and no google search bar for me is worth it. I did notice that when i try to long press home screen to add a shortcut / app that sometimes the app drawer is empty/black, so now i just open the app drawer first. adding widgets are no problem though. overall, love it, and would pay for it!

Does this need to be installed thru a computer....?

Nope, just click that link I posted on your phone and that takes you right to it. No computer needed.

I guess I am one of the few who do not know how to install an APK. Or maybe I am one of the few willing to admit I don't have a clue! I see by following the link in the OP where the APK can be found. Anyone have a link to some general instructions?

Before I do that, though can someone tell me if there is any advantage to using Nova over Go Launcher EX for a non rooted phone?

How to...
1) Click this link on your phone: http://teslacoilsw.com/nova/download/NovaLauncher_beta.apk. It will download the app.
2) Once downloaded, just click the file (called novalauncher_beta.apk) in your downloads folder to install it. Make sure in your ICS settings you allow non-market apps.
3) Once installed, just press the home key on your phone and it will ask you what program you want. Select Nova Launcher.

I found it better than golauncher because Go launcher doesn't really bring any of the ICS experience. It was designed for older android versions. Nova is pure ICS goodness, but with more tweaks and settings available.

Thanks for the link and the help. I loaded it, discovered the auto rotate was not set for the home screen and started looking for settings. NO MENU BUTTON! How do you set up Nova Launcher?

Go into the "app drawer" and hit menu button (three dots in the top right corner) and there you go.

It's good to see that you can install if your not rooted. My next question would be how can you uninstall Nova, since It's a beta launcher can we go back to stock?

Thanks in advance.

I keep seeing "app drawer" mentioned. What is it and how do I get to it? I feel like I have been missing out on the ICS experience.

Downloaded and installed last night. Thanks for posting. This is a much better experience. Can finally see my homescreens in landscape. Many other neat features.

Settings->Apps. Click "All". Click Nova Launcher. Click Uninstall.

Alternatively, if you want to go back to the stock launcher without removing it, clear the Launch By Default option instead of hitting uninstall. The next time you hit the home button, you'll be prompted as to which launcher you want to use.

Nova Launcher is up to beta 7 now: [APP] Nova Launcher Beta (ICS based) - Page 76 - xda-developers

Beta 7 came right after beta 6 to fix fc problem. Changelog for beta 6:

  • Various minor optimizations.
Update in the Nova settings

The "app drawer" is where all of your applications are, on your home screen its the circle with 6 dots in it right above the home button.

Dumb me...but how do I add apps etc to the bottom dock??? Cant figure it out. Its a bit different than the Launcher pro I've been rocking for the last three years!!!

Drag the app that is already there to the trash and drag a new one down to the spot you want it.
