I understand that for now, while not a lot of people are in, it's more focused on invites.

I sent a few of my friends an invite, and they have come through alright. What it does do is ask for you to enter your gmail address, or follow the prompts to create one. To my knowledge, G+ doesn't work unless you have a working gmail address.

Personally I think that if people wanna post their emails it's no big deal. If they don't mind dealing with the consequences anyway. However, I'm not a mod so I'll definitely abide by the rules. Not hard to send a pm.

I don't know about you guys but I guess all my facebook friends are a bunch of otrichs who like to bury their heads in the sand. Maybe its just the fear of the unknown. I am doing everything short of selling the kitchen sink to get friends to request invites. Anyhow I am going to say it again if you do have an invite and it is saying its not open just leave it on that page and when it opens the page will refresh on its own allowing you to join.

I agree with your statement it really does appear that a valid gmail account is needed

Yes a google account is required to join but not to receive an invite.
