Switching off system persistent of adw did the trick. Thanks Tank. I'm pretty sure I've always had that checked in adw and it used to orient correctly. Maybe there was a recent update to adw that changed something I wasn't aware of...

Yeah, he added it to the persistance feature because many redraws are caused by the orientation switch itself.
