Original Moto Droid Woes

My lady-friends phone is doing this same sort of stuff, especially with gchat and text messaging...

I have a droid x so I'm familiar with rooting, rom'ing and oc'ing... That being said, is it the same steps to root, flash rom, etc...?

What's the best rom for a Droid? How do you do a factory reset (same as droid x in clockwork?)? Is this droid on the newest OS or should I download a newer one, is there a gingerbread release for OG Droid?

Any links to the necessary steps and software downloads are appreciated. Thanks

You can factory reset a nonrooted Droid in the settings. There are gb roms for the droid, most of them are memory intense so some people are having problems multitasking. For your lady friend I would suggest a solid froyo rom so she doesnt have to work around the few gb bugs.

Chevyno1's simply stunning 5.4 gingerbread 2.3.4 = the best rom gingerbread OR froyo I have EVER run, Droid does but chevyno1 does better ;)

It'll make just about anyone think twice about upgrading early or at all lol

+1!!!! I have an og droid and am on this build and I have to say its awesome!! None of the reported issues known on gingerbread with this build of Chevyno1 at all. He is a great dev, a perfectionist, and respects us Droid users cuz he truly knows how rare our og.droids are,its really hard to brick the og.Droid.(Not saying its not possible, the risk is still there.) We have the grandfather of all droids and the first and possibly the only phone that doesn't have a locked bootloader, making it truly open and free to modify to your likening! Rooting isn't hard research on it is easy(xda dev's site has easy ways for it as well as posts here) give it a few reads and do it. It wont be any worse than what your doing now and you'll ask yourself why you didn't do it long before now. You wont be sorry. It takes the Droid to a new level and when dev's release roms its like getting a new phone every time. Try it I'll be keeping my Droid long after my upgrade and as long as devs are doing roms for it I'm keeping my beloved Droid.

Also in response to the D1 being one of the easiest phones to rom and play with... I would totally disagree, my DX was farrrrrrr easier to root/add roms/etc. Root with software (z4, oneclick) BAM, bootstrap (download from market) BAM, install whatever rom you want BAM. Done.

D1 i had to actually install RSDlite with drivers (ughhh), then i had to custom sbf it, then run update.zip, THEN i had to install rom manager, THEN i had to install Clockwork (TWICE because the first one didn't take and messed the phone up), then I could finally install SS5.4. Though when the phone wasn't possessed I was extremely impressed by SS5.4 on the D1, it ran really smoothly and besides a few things seems almost as good as my DX running liberty v0.6. If the hardware/touchscreen on the D1 wasn't so messed up the thing would be essentially a brand new droid.

Actually when I had to replace my first Droid(due to a hardware/virus that I got in an app that I had) Verizon sent me my seconded one and it was updated on the latest build ie... 2.2.1 z4root wouldn't work on it but I found super-one-click 1.3 on xda dev site, dwnlded it saved it to a folder, went to Motorola's website, dwnlded the drivers for my PC (mine was 64bits) connected up my Droid ran the file, made sure USB debugging was on followed the three or four step instructions, and rebooted, and bamm there I was, rooted with superuser! Went to the market dwnlded rom manager, flashed clockworkmod recovery, backed up my stock rom, dwnled busybox, ran that, and decided to flash rzrecovery, and have been flashing roms/kernals ever since. Easy as that! And I'm really not computer savy either. But if I can IMHO anyone can! I'm a 40yr old wife and mom and don't even have a computer,(borrowed a relatives PC.) its easy honestly!

well i'm glad superoneclick worked for you as it and z4 definitely did not for me but it sounds like even if SOC didn't work, you'd still be able to figure it out. I'm not really sure what being a 40yr old wife and mom has to do with rooting your phone and runnning roms, are most 40yr old women that have husbands and kids dumb and inept? :)

Dumb?!?! Inept?!?!, Seriously!? Not hardly! What I ment was I didn't have alot of time to invest in a whole lot of researching! Busy lifestyle! Honestly thought you'd understand what I ment didn't know that I had to spell it out! And no z4root didn't work at all for me! I was agreeing with you on that issue! The point is rooting my phone was easy to do that's what I am saying! And that the Droid is easy to flash kernals, custom roms and tweaking it up to your likening!
That is the point of this post!!

OK well I thought reinstalling 2.2.2 or going to GB (phone is running SS 5.4 now, which is awesome) would fix the hardware issue.

The phone is possessed, anyone know how to fix this other than buying a new phone? Buttons press themselves, parts of the touchscreen work off and on, other times it will work flawelessly, but mostly it's just messed up.

I've heard something about the digitalizer or something like that going bad in some droids after awhile and act exactly like yours. however I also heard it's a fairly easy cheap hardware fix

Here is a site i found on replacing the digitizer screen. The part is $50, and you can repair it yourself, they have a you tube video showing how, and it also come with instructions. They do replace it for you for some products, not sure about the OG though.

Im in the same boat, my screen does some random freaking out sometimes, ive noticed it is usually when it starts to heat up a little. Hope this helps!! and good luck if your going to take it on.

Edit: forgot to post the site lol. http://www.repairsuniverse.com/motorola-droid-a855-touch-screen-digitizer-glass-replacement.html
