OverClocking 101

Thank you. When I installed med volt 1200, the temperature went down from when I had installed low volt 1200, so I thought maybe the kernels only took effect after changing the settings in setCPU after installing each kernel.

maybe this is a dumb question but would it be practical to have two profiles with the same priorities or should each one be a completely different number and do u think it would be best to go by fives? it's just hard for me to make logic outta the whole thing.

I would do at least by five so you can add something later quickly. And I actually have both battery and cpu temps at the same priority since they both set the frequency to the same number and it doesn't matter which one gets checked first.

Alright so hopefully someone can help me. I just rooted a couple days ago, and yesterday I finally installed one of ChevyNo1's kernels. Amazing kernel.

Anyway, I am running 1GHz max, 125 min. I have 2 profiles set: when its charging 550/125 and when temps gets > 45 celsius for 550/125 as well. Thats it.

It seems that this DRAINS my battery. Is there a setting I can put on or make some adjustment to save some kind of battery life?

My 'advanced' settings are 46875/86/0/0 those were set automatically when I first got SETCPU, so I didn't really mess with them since I didn't know what I was doing.

Anyway, Skull One or anyone, any help if you have any of how to help battery life or if my settings are off?

Thanks a ton!

Cheers

I just overclocked mine a couple days ago, so I don't know much about it, but I think what helped conserve my battery the most is the screen off profile. I set it to near minimum with the 2nd highest priority.

Still only get like 6 hours of battery(okay maybe a bit more than that) unless I BARELY use my phone....I can't seem to get it straight. HOW MUCH BATTERY LIFE ARE YOU GETTING SKULL?? I'm using the same exact kernel; I know every cpu is different but I wonder what my battery life would be like if I set my settings EXACTLY as you posted yours.

Hey TuBitMittens,

I am just like you, a power user, and I can easily burn through a battery in 4-6 hours. I run the JRummy LithiumMod ROM with a P3Droid 125mHz-1000mHz kernel, and I have a bunch of profiles set like most people here. My settings are for the most part, optimized for battery, except I do keep SetCPU set to 'Ondemand' at all times (for best performance), and I keep my screen fully bright (because I can't stand to own such a beautiful screen with nice bright vibrant colors and then make it all dim and dark looking). I think it is a combination of the bright screen settings, and regularly using 3G in areas of low signal (making the radio draw more juice) that is the cause behind my rapid battery loss. I'm sure all those Adobe Flash clips off CNN don't help either.

But my solution for this problem of Rapid Battery Loss (RBL), is to buy 2 spare batteries (for a total of 3 available at any given time), and a USB dock which has a battery charging cradle (has separate cradle so it can charge batteries by itself without phone present). I got the 2 genuine Motorola batteries for $20 on eBay and the charger cradle/USB Dock was $16 and this was the best investment I ever made. I do keep spare phone chargers in my vehicles, but I never even use them at all anymore, since I just swap out the battery when it gets low.

One other advantage to this whole setup is that after you've discharged a battery watching some Adobe Flash video clips, and the battery is all toasty hot, you can take out the dead battery and put it in your pocket to cool down and put in a fresh battery which you also carry in your pocket and that nice cold battery will help to cool the phone down when you put it in. And once you put the dead battery on the charging cradle to charge, I think it uses the USB charge profile because they stay total cool on the charger and don't even heat up (which helps to prolong the life of the lithium battery type).

I'm not telling everybody to go and do what I do, but I will tell you that this is one big reason I will never buy an Apple iPhone or MacBook or anything like that is because I need devices with removable batteries at all times. I use this same strategy for both my netbook and my laptop. I have a spare for each one, and my netbook lasts 12-14 hours on 2 batteries and my big mammoth Thinkpad last 5-6 hours with 2 batteries. I just don't like to use AC power cords when I'm outside of the home. And since Apple doesn't offer this flexibility, I was naturally drawn toward an Android product, which I'm very happy about now, because after comparing the 'tweakability' of my rooted phone vs. my brother's jailbroken iPhone, I am happy that I got sucked into the endless sea of Android customization abilities that even a jailbroken iPhone can't come close to.

I completely agree, Sam -- I take the same approach and just don't care about battery drain -- if you really want to use the phone to the max, you have to give it power, and until battery technology improves, keeping spares on hand is the solution.

I'm wondering how much more battery life would get if the screen brightness is on low, but I guess our usage is always the biggest factor of course

After resetting, rerotting, and reoverclocking, my phone is kinda laggy. Does this mean I should download a lower mhz kernel? I have 1.2 ghz med vol right now

I have a question. In SetCPU it says my Sampling rate is -1 --1 and is already set to -1...What does this mean compared to settings with it set at 2500 etc.?

Please take a screen shot of that. Because I have never seen a number lower than 30000 allowed in Sampling Rate while using On Demand as the governor under a Froyo 2.2 ROM.

Ok I have another newb question.

I set my SetCPU according to your instructions. It was a 1200 mghz kernel and set CPU says its running at max 1200 and min 250.

But I have a CPU Widget on my phone and, sitting here doing nothing, it keeps fluctuating between 250 to 400 to 800, while set cpu keeps saying 1200 250.

Am I doing something wrong?

Ok I have a very big problem.

The CPU and Temp Widget I have says my battery is 46 degress celcisu (waaaaay hot) but my SetCPU hasn't changed from 39.0 degrees. My CPU is set to drop if it reaches over 44.9 degrees celsius, but if my SetCPU isn't registering temperature changes then it might be overheating.

Help! Please!
