Palm Users Who Changed to Droid?

I've been a Palm user since the Palm III, migrating to Palm IIIx -> Palm V -> Palm Vx -> Kyocera 7135 -> Treo 650 -> Treo 700p.

I've been using the Moto Droid since launch day and like most aspects of it.
What I *really* miss, though, is the ability to search my calendar on the device.

I tried installing Aurora from the Android Market, but its not very good. A search doesn't pull up many of the entries that I know are there (and show up if I search via the Gmail website).

Has anyone found any solutions to effectively searching the calendar?

Aurora works great for me. I don't know why it isn't working for you. Maybe uninstall and try again? I NEED a calendar search and this one is working fine.

I am using Power Search, which will find anything on the phone... one of my biggest complaints was not being able to search the calendar... this has helped.

Any other suggestions are welcome though...!

I just uninstalled, rebooted the Droid, then reinstalled. Same thing and there doesn't seem to be a pattern to why it doesn't find certain entries that I know are there.

For example, it will pull up an entry from 1999, but won't find one from September of 2008. Another example is it will see a flight I had scheduled two weeks ago, but not any of the ones before that (and I fly quite often).

Is there a way for to force it to index my whole calendar?

I will try "Power Search" suggested by lowtech and see how that works out.

Quick update: I tried "Power Search" and the results were the same as Aurora. I wonder if the Gmail calendar is only exposing certain blocks of dates. Oh well.

My brains are in there....

I am also looking to switch from Palm treo to Droid. I've run Palm products for 7 years, upgrading every few years, and now am in new territory. I am worried that all my contacts, calendar options, memos and tasks will be lost. I have TONS of memos and tasks because that is where I store my brains. I would be Lost without them. Is there a way to store those apps as well? Also, one person posted that they missed their splashID. I have that as well with lots of stuff on it. Can that data be transferred to another security application or do you have to do it all manually? Thanks. Signed, Confused & Scared.

I had a Palm 755P and the transition was the easiest ever. Before the Palm 755P I had a Palm 650. The transition from the 755P to Droid was easier than the 650 to 755P.

The Droid is waaaaaayyyyyyyy better anyway. Too bad Palm is falling pretty quickly behind the curve. Before the Iphone I think Palm was the greatest. Now the Droid is the greatest.

Long Live the Droid...

I went from Palm > Droid > Eris. Before I switched I synched my calendar and contacts to Google, whcih syncs (almost) automatically with the Android phones. Works great! ToDo's and Memos were less vital to me and I cannot give you good advice - others will I'll bet.

One good thing is, if you get really spooked, you can switch back to your Palm or to something else... you have 30 days!

I have been using palm products since the mid 90's, started with the Pilot and more recently the 755p. I have been using the MOTO droid since day 1.

VZW tech transferred contacts from treo to droid in-store and gave me printed directions to sync the rest of my information (Outlook and Ical) to google and it worked great.

I found the following on one of the other sites, thanks to Minyangmao over there for posting.

Former Palm Centro user here, switched to Droid on release.

Palm to Droid:

Contacts, Tasks, Calendar Events, and Memos Sync:
use CompanionLink:

Sync your desktop software with Google and your phone

it's a time-limited trial, but you only need to sync once. I tried a buncha methods and this was the easiest and most comprehensive. It sends To-Do Lists to google calendar (not the most elegant solution but may have changed since then), and Memos to Contacts as |M| Your Memo Title |M| - also very inelegant but what can you do.

For Tasks:
I now use gTasks; syncs with Google tasks in Gmail; sync is wonky at times, but I like to have laptop access to my tasks list so the sync is key for me;

For Memos:
I now use GDocs Notepad; syncs with Google Docs; wish companionlink woulda linked my old memos to my google docs, but hey you can't have everything I guess. My new memos are now sync'd with Google docs, and I can easily archive them in google docs when i'm not using the memos as much; i still miss having all my old memos easily accessible, but eh I'll live =) I mean on second though Memo to Contacts actually works okay because search will pick up the titles of the memos...I guess i miss the "search all the memo text search" that palm had...

For Calendar:
Use google calendar; love it;

For Contacts:
Use Gmail contacts; takes a while to clean everything up after sync with companionlink, but having all your email, phone, physical addresses, etc in one place is unbelievably awesome.

Cheers!

hey if any of you former Palm owners are familiar with TAKEphONE, the developer created it for Android - search it through the Market. I'm using it and so far it seems to be work well. I like it better when searching through my contacts. Not yet fully ready for 2.0, but it does the job.

Calendar Notification

I would like to hear my calendar alarms, but not other notifications. Is there a way to silence all notifications except the calendar alarms?

Another thought for palm users... if you liked to group applications in palmos (as I did) using categories, I found a way to get a "similar" result. I have now set up several folders on my home screen that I drop similar applications into. That way Im not searching through what is now becoming a pretty large collection of apps to find something Im looking for.

A nice substitute for speed dial is to create a folder that contains shortcuts for direct dial... I've done one for all my family - The icons are pictures.

It takes some effort to set up, but it should be a one time event.

I think mjeagent's review is very good. Ive "played around" with the IPhone 3GS quite a bit . Awesome devices. Having said that, I think you have to consider carrier too. For me and the way I use the device, the Droid is looking like a great choice, and one that I think will be a fairly quick leap for those who were PalmOS fans in the past. For me, it was a very intuitive migration.

My 755P was still in great shape... needed to be hard reset, and reloaded (was running a little slow lately). But the Droid is at another level!

jc

Could you please describe exactly how you added the contacts/phone numbers to the folder? Thanks.
